‘Twould be a shame if Hines Ward didn’t retire a Steeler

    Getty Images composite

Hines Ward, the hard-blocking anchor of the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers corps for much of the last decade, was in the news over the weekend. Not much of it was pleasant for Ward.

A couple of reports surfaced indicating that Ward wasn't likely to return to the Steelers. Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review told ESPN that he didn't believe Ward would be back with the Steelers, and the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora said his sources believe that Ward won't be back.

On Saturday, Hines took to Facebook to make his case for staying.

I don't normally like to respond to rumors, but as I've said all along, I want to finish my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And as I've already told the organization, I am willing to work with them to restructure my contract to make sure this happens.
    - HINES

Steelers sources told Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that no decision at all had been made on Ward, but of course, that's what they would say. At any rate, the best-case scenario for Ward right now is that his status with the Steelers is up in the air, which leaves open the possibility that Hines Ward could be in a different uniform in 2012.

And that would be weird. Imagine Ward playing for, say … the Baltimore Ravens.

The problem with keeping Ward is that, with the Steelers, he's now clearly their fourth receiver. Even if he's willing to restructure his contract down to the league minimum, teams generally don't carry fourth receivers that don't play special teams. Ward, a four-time Pro Bowler and at the age of 35, might not be thrilled with special teams duty.

Then again, he is Hines Ward. He enjoys smashing people in the face like a normal person enjoys an ice cream sundae. When he was a child, and he brought home a good report card, his parents rewarded him by giving him permission to hit a neighbor kid in the mouth with a forearm shiver (Note: There is no truth to that).

Maybe he'd willingly play special teams. Maybe he'd be a great long-snapper. Still, it would force the Steelers to make a sacrifice, because the position of fourth receiver is also developmental ‒ you want a guy there who you can hopefully one day turn into a starter. Ward's days of starting are behind him.

Ward says he's going to play in 2012, whether it be with the Steelers or elsewhere. I don't imagine there'd be much of a problem finding a position elsewhere, as few teams have three quality young receivers like Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown.

And there are teams out there which always seem to need receiver depth. One of them happens to also be in the AFC North, and they wear purple.

Usually you do want a younger guy in the 4th slot, but I think that might be less of a factor when their top 3 guys are all very young. A veteran presence is probably more valuable for depth as a mentor and balancing factor. They gain little by bringing in another young speedster, so I would say they should only drop Ward if they can find a better veteran 4th option, which is unlikely. Cut his pay and keep him.

The Steelers 3 young guns are also prolly the 3 fastest receivers in the NFL also. I mean remember Devon Hester? He was so great cause of his speed, he got old ( i think lol) and he just died down. Ward on the other hand, i'snt as fast but is a dam good receiver. I agree just cut his pay and let him retire a great Steeler. I dont wanna see his number in purple...thats just wrong.

They already have Jerricho Cotchery who was playing better than Ward as the 4th receiver who they can re-sign if they want to.

hope pitt keeps him as their #4. Why not, another year won't hurt and his loss would be kind of hard on the team, they should definitely keep him!

What happened to "The Steeler Family?" Hines Ward has such a love for the Steelers. Such a sheer joy in playing. Now they are just going to throw him away. That's just sad.

That's what happens when you get old and worn out. Time stands still for no one.

He will always be part of the Steeler family no matter what. Similar career ends came to Franco Harris, Mike Webster, Merril Hoge, Greg Lloyd, Tunch Ilkin and other famous long term Steelers who ended up playing a season or two for another team at the end of their careers. They are still Steelers as far as anyone is concerned not Seahwaks, Chiefs, Bears, Panthers, Packers etc.

They aren't throwing him away. It's a business, always was always will be. He held out of training camp back in '05 to get a contract, so it goes both ways...

Move Hines to QB #3. He did play Kordell Stewart slash football at Georgia in college. Played running back, receiver, and QB in his time there. And as a Ravens fan, that picture of Hines in our purple is horrible....

As a Steeler fan, I agree that picture of Hines in purple is horrible. Intersting take on moving Hines to QB#3 though.

First of all, that faked Getty Image is pretty bad. Don't know where you got it. Secondly, the Steelers keep Hines for his last season then for heaven's sake, put him in first. I admit I don't know football terminology, but I do know my hometown team. Keep Hines. We need Hines. Put the younger kids in the 2nd, 3rd and fourth slots. You don't put someone like Hines Ward in the 4th slot. Geesh.

I'm a Steeler fan first and foremost...But have any of you watched him play last year? His skills are diminished sadly...Its a sad business but you have to be cutthroat and look thru the windshield and not the rearview mirror. By keeping a useless (physically) receiver you may be missing the next young hines ward. The Steelers track record is very hard to question.

Pittsburgh should let Hines Ward be a player/coach. His enthusiasm, work ethick, and attitude definitely carry over to those around him. Please Pittsburgh, let Hines retire a Steeler. He has done alot for the Steelers.

I'm confident that the Rooney's know better than to let Hines Ward ever play anywhere else!

They'll get it done and Hines Ward will retire wearing a Steelers uniform... AS HE DESERVES TOO!
      • Davis 3 months ago
The Rooney's let Franco Harris retire in Seattle, and he was a way bigger part of the Steelers. Hines did holdout a few seasons ago so lets not act like he is all about the team...

I think he'd make a great wide receivers coach.

The Steelers front office isn't making any sense right now. They're essentially saying "We want to run the ball more (and #$%$ off Ben), and we are going to best achieve that by kicking out the best blocking receiver that game has ever seen because he's lost a step."

Bottom line any pro in any sport doesnt like to be told to retire. They want to do it on their terms even if they cant play up to the standards anymore. Its tuff to retire for any pro or most of them anyways. I dont know to many pros that left Pittsburgh and went to other teams that did anything special ...(exception might be Rod Woodson) Its sad to see a player play past their time (in any sport) Hines retire as a Steeler when your done playing.

MJD, you are stupid. As most people have already said the steelers top 3 wide outs are very young and why why would you not keep one of the best, toughest, and smartest, receivers to ever play the game to mentor these young players. Not to mention Sanders, as good as he may become, seems to have a bit of a Glass body (Missed 5 games last year), and I hardly think a rookie is going to come in and do what even an aging Hines can do If he gets hurt, again. Not to mention with there receiving corp I highly doubt they'll be drafting a receiver is high on there priority list. (Corner, O-line, Nose Tackle). I say Dump Mendenhall, Aaron Smith retire (You've been one of my favorite players for a long time, but sorry man, spending most of the last 3 seasons on the sidelines isn't helping the team, coaching perhaps?) Dump Max Starks, again, and take the big salery guys and restructure the contracts so we can make sure Hines stays were he belongs till he retires. In the Black and Gold.

The bottom line is if Hines Ward can still play he should play regardless of the politics in the Steelers front office if not in Pittsburgh then somewhere else. Ward has always been slow but he can block with the best of them and is a sure-handed receivers in short to mid yardage situation. He is not as bad as his numbers this year indicate but Roethlisberger and offensive coordinator Arians conspired to de-emphasize him on offense in favor of chucking down field to Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown, which is a departure from the traditional Pittsburgh way. He still caught a very high percentage of the passes thrown his way this year. There is no reason for him to retire and he knows it.

This is an example of the ugly business side. It doens't matter how great you are (were?) as a player. It's still a business decision. Hines Ward (in my opinion) is one of the greatest to play receiver. And I will argue anyone, that he is indeed the toughest receiver ever to play the game. Whatever happens Ward, thank you for all the great years!

I dont care what it takes to keep Hines,he has to stay in a Steelers uniform,he is a good mentor to the young recievers and he is a great one himself.I hated that picture of him as a raven ,so dont even think that ,he is steeler for life!
    • RockportRockets  •  3 months ago
If you are gonna put him another helmet, at least make it look as freakin' tight as the steeler's one he wears. How does he get his head into that thing?????
    • Dr_Evil_Phd  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  3 months ago
At $4 Million this year. Cut him and resign for minimum. If he wants to retire a steeler, and I would like that too, do what is best for team. 36 year old receivers, 4th on depth chart don't make $4 unless you are stupid like the raiders or redskins.

He would make a good 3rd QB......they could drop Batch or Dixon.

I'm quite sure there's one thing Hines definitely won't be doing. And that is joining the Ravens. I think he would consider being a waterboy on any other team before joining them. I'm sure he has respect for them, but they are the enemy. I also have a lot of respect for them. But...
