Two men try, but fail to make NFL cheer squads

Shutdown Corner

NFL cheerleading teams are traditionally filled with dancing women wearing spandex, but two men tried to change that over the weekend. Sacha Heppel tried out for the Denver Broncos cheer squad and Dixon Hernandez tried the same with the Houston Texans. Unfortunately, neither man's moves were good enough to make the cut.

Heppel said he wanted to be the first male cheerleader in the NFL. (Don't anyone tell him the Baltimore Ravens already have a co-ed cheer squad.) Hernandez tried out to have fun.

"I was like, 'why not try out, and just go for it and have some fun?' I'm here to have fun, and for the experience and, you know, just to see what it's all about," Hernandez said in an interview with KTRK. "Who wouldn't want to be a Texans Cheerleader?"

There are no gender restrictions on either team. A squad official in Denver said all are welcome.

"It's an open call, so anyone can try out. We base everything on dance ability."

The other people trying to make the team were supportive of Heppel and Hernandez. A cheerleader-wannabe in Denver said there's no reason Heppel shouldn't try to follow his dreams.

"I think it's awesome. Whatever you want to do, do it. Pursue your dreams. That's what I'm doing."

Good advice for us all. Though neither man made their team, both plan on trying again next year. Based on their moves, Hernandez appears to be the more likely candidate to be wearing Spandex on the sidelines next season.
