Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson failed to duplicate his previous statistical success during the 2013 season.

For once, Johnson had a good excuse.

CBS Sports writer Jason La Confora reports Johnson played most of the season with a meniscus tear in his knee. Johnson will have surgery to repair his injury on Tuesday.

Johnson finished with 1,077 rushing yards (11th in the NFL) and six touchdowns in 2013. It was the second-lowest rushing total of his career since he ran for 1,047 yards in 2011.

It does not appear Johnson will ever duplicate his outstanding 2009 season. Johnson rushed for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns, plus 503 receiving yards and two touchdowns that season. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards since entering the NFL in 2008, but is no longer viewed as one of the NFL's elite running backs.

At least we know why Johnson did not live up to those expectations this season.
