Thad Magic comes up just short as Bengals trip up Bills, Lewis injures foot

Thad Lewis led his undermanned, shorthanded Buffalo Bills into a game that few thought he could win.

They didn't. But Lewis was terrific in defeat. The Bills lost to the Cincinnati Bengals, who are now alone in first place in the AFC North, in overtime, 27-24.

Lewis did all he could, completing 19 of 32 passes — without leading receiver Stevie Johnson playing, mind you — for 216 yards. He also ran for a touchdown, although Lewis did lose a fumble, too, and his couldn't get the Bills out from backed up against their own end zone.

Still, it was a heroic effort. And Lewis likely was playing hurt.

Will Lewis be able to go next week? If not, it's a cruel blow to the Bills, who already are without EJ Manuel for several weeks and might have a third starting quarterback in three games.

But if Lewis can go in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins, the Bills should be in good hands. He proved himself to be calm, cool, collected — and dangerous. Lewis led the Bills back from a 14-point deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, the latter on a gorgeous, perfectly thrown rainbow pass to Marquise Goodwin with 1:08 remaining.

The fact that Lewis could go from the Bills' practice squad to leading two two-minute drives late in the game that traveled 45 and 86 yards is incredible. But the fact that Lewis also was hurt in this hope-giving game is so typical of the Bills' continued bad luck at the position.
