Houston Texans running back Cierre Wood played at Notre Dame last season, which normally wouldn't be that interesting in a NFL locker room.
But, Wood picked an interesting year to be at Notre Dame, with the Manti Te'o story and all.
We'll assume you remember that debacle, about Te'o believing he had a girlfriend, then it turned out she didn't exist. A Deadspin story exposed the hoax, which Te'o had no part in orchestrating despite cries to the contrary when the story came out. Since then Te'o has been the punchline for millions of unfunny jokes. (Seriously people, if you're still using Te'o fake girlfriend jokes, please work on your routine.)
NFL players are like the rest of us, and it's not surprising that Wood was asked about Te'o not long after the Texans signed him as an undrafted free agent.
“Everybody asks me about Te’o,” Wood told CSNHouston.com. “That was just something I expected was going to happen. I got asked on the street a couple times, so I expected it in the locker room.”
It turns out that Wood actually has a decent story to tell when he is asked. He had some contact with Te'o's girlfriend. Kind of.
He said he heard some of the conversations, and even took the opportunity to say hello once.
“It was along the lines of, if I came in here with a goldfish and said, ‘Hey, this is my goldfish, Larry.’ You guys are going to go, ‘OK. So what?’” Wood said on Monday. “You go home after that. I would come over to ask for a controller and he would be like, ‘I’m just gonna talk to my girl.’ I looked at the computer screen or whatever and it was blank. I really don’t care. I just heard somebody talking to me … ‘I just want to introduce myself. Hi. I’m Cierre. How are you doing? Nice to meet you.’ And I went on about my business.”
So there you go. But please, no Te'o jokes. They're lame.
