The Tennessee Titans are changing backup quarterbacks behind Jake Locker this offseason as ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the team has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Ryan Fitzpatrick just hours after terminating the contract of veteran Matt Hasselbeck.
Financial terms of Fitzpatrick's deal with the Titans were not disclosed.
Fitzpatrick, a 2005 seventh-round pick out of Harvard by the St. Louis Rams, was released last week by the Buffalo Bills for salary cap reasons. In four seasons with the Bills, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Fitzpatrick started 52 of 55 games, completing 59.8 percent of 1,041 pass attempts for 11,654 yards with 80 touchdowns and 64 interceptions. Fitzpatrick signed a six-year, $62.2 million extension midway through the 2011 season, but was released as the Bills, who changed coaching staffs this offseason, sought to avoid paying a $3 million roster bonus that was due on March 13.
Earlier on Monday, the Titans released the 37-year-old Hasselbeck, who was entering the final season of a three-year, $20 million contract that called for a base salary of $5.5 million in 2013. By releasing Hasselbeck, the Titans saved $5.5 million in both cash and cap space this season.
Hasselbeck started 21 games and passed for 4,938 yards with 25 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his 25 games with the Titans and is not expected to be out of work long. Multiple reports surfaced on Monday night that Hasselbeck is closing in on a two-year deal to become the backup quarterback to Andrew Luck with the Indianapolis Colts.
Fitzpatrick will now be the No. 2 behind Locker with Rusty Smith and Nathan Enderle rounding out the quarterback depth chart.
