After two Tampa Bay Buccaneers came down with a serious staph infection, the team went through the steps of eliminating the bacteria from its facility.

Guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes have both been sidelined by MRSA, a serious staph infection. Tynes had surgery on an infected toe this week. Nicks didn't play against New England last week, and the team eventually disclosed that he had an infection on his left foot.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the team discovered the MRSA outbreak when the team was in New England last week, had the building sanitized and informed the players on Monday.

The NFLPA was looking into the issue:

Nicks is sidelined indefinitely. The team signed kicker Rian Lindell on the same day Tynes had his surgery.

Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik told ESPN the team didn't want to take any chances.

"We had a company come in and nuke the building a week ago after the cultures taken from Nicks and Tynes confirmed it was MRSA," Dominik said, according to ESPN. "It was a precautionary move, but we didn't want to fool with it. Our owners said spare no expense. We had the facility treated, and the league office approved of our actions."

MRSA is a powerful bacteria that is resistant to some penicillin treatments. The NFL had an outbreak of staph infections last decade, including the Browns, who were sued by former players LeCharles Bentley and Joe Jurevicius over the matter.
