Super Bowl XLVI’s five most valuable players

Steve Weatherford leaps with joy (Getty Images)

Steve Weatherford, Punter, New York Giants. Hold your heads up high today, punters of America. Steve Weatherford did you proud. Weatherford punted four times on the day, and after three of them, the Patriots were started inside their own 10 ‒ one was downed at the 6, one was downed at the 4, and Wes Welker fair caught one at the 8. Those long fields were a huge factor, especially in the first half.

Mario Manningham, Wide Receiver, New York Giants. What more needs to be said about this? It'll be one of the most famous and best catches in NFL history. And rightfully so. Personally, I'll take it over the David Tyree catch from four years ago. It's not a more amazing play, but it's more of a catch and less of something wacky that just sort of happened. The throw was picture-perfect, as were the hands, the toes and the timing. A thing of beauty.

Jason Pierre-Paul, Defensive End, New York Giants. A batted-down pass in the first quarter kept the Patriots out of the end zone and forced the field goal unit onto the field. He added another bat-down in the second quarter. On the deep-ball interception by Chase Blackburn that was intended for Rob Gronkowski, it was Pierre-Paul who was in Brady's face.

Eli Manning, Quarterback, New York Giants. The final numbers on Eli looked like this: 30 of 40, 296 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions. His signature play from this game will be the completion to Manningham, and even though it didn't end in a TD pass, that last drive counts as a signature one. I don't think anyone stood to gain more from a win here than Eli, and he went out and played well enough to earn it.

[ Giants win Super Bowl behind another comeback by Eli Manning ]

Justin Tuck, Defensive End, New York Giants. What a monster game from Justin Tuck. Credit him with the first-quarter safety, because it was Tuck's pressure that made him throw it away. Tuck got Brady with :48 seconds left on a third and 10, forcing the Patriots to burn their last timeout. In the third quarter, Tuck got Brady after first dropping back in zone coverage, then stepping up to end the quarterback scramble. That was on a third down, too. He just beat the guy in front of him all day long.

And Weatherford's other punt had a gunner standing on the goal line waiting for it to drop. It hit the 4 yard line or so, but the bounce took it out of the guy's reach. So he had 4 perfect punts, and but for the football bounce he'd have pinned them back there all 4 times.

Ya nicks has a great game but he did fumble that the giants were luckily able to recover so that's why he's not one of the mvps

What about Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz

Excellent point re: the Manningham vs. the Tyree (overrated) catch.
      • joe 3 months ago
Overrated?? are you kidding me? Do you watch football? do you know the impact of the tyree catch, its was hands down the best play in super bowl history. Go watch soccer or something.
      • Evan Bolick 3 months ago
Whatever man. It is an overrated catch. The Tyree catch was more LUCK than SKILL. There was no skillful reason that ball should have stayed pinned to the helmet!
What was AMAZING about the Tyree catch was Manning escaping when he was in the clutches of seemingly three defenders. What impact did the Tyree catch have? I don't see people around the league catching passes routinely on their helmets since then. I don't see teams rushing out to sign middling third-option receivers thanks to Tyree. In fact, Tyree barely lasted a year after the catch!
What Manningham did, on the other hand, was almost all skill. It was an incredible display of toughness (hit almost immediately by two defenders), body control (keeping two feet in bounds), and ball security (actually cradling/holding onto the ball himself).

Im not trying to denigrate Tyree (though he is an idiot - he would trade the catch to stop gay marriage? WHAAAAAT?), but the point Cole, and myself makes, is that it is greater to award skill over luck and Tyree's catch necessitated a HUGE chunk of luck.

i`ve been rigidly watching super bowls since vikings/chiefs~1969~seen alot of SUPER ones without a doubt...ten years from now this one~2012 edition~will be rated in the top three played to this point...steelers 1979 #2 and bears win over the patriots 1986 there in the third spot simply because it was so lop~sided... i was probly the only person on this side of the mississippi river to bet on the pats. but with 30 to 1 odds on a hundred bucks~

No Hakeem Nicks? Seriously? Should have won MVP, except he didn't score a TD, so nobody cares. Doesn't change the fact that he had the best performance of the night.

I totally disagree with you, it was a great game and all the players played their hearts out no one more than Brady and it broke my heart that they lost

if brady threw it better to welker.....we'll never know

Can't believe that Nix didn't make the list. 10 catches?
      • Evan Bolick 3 months ago
I cant believe you can't spell a simple name like "Nicks" right. Unlike you, Nicks and I both received top-notch educations at UNC (GO HEELS!)

What about the Giants who kept falling down on defense and faking injuries? Those guys are the real MVPs.
      • joe 3 months ago
Here come the excuses....is that all? maybe Archie manning paid off the refs? maybe brady was stunned by gisele screwing the giants offensive line? maybe gronkowski was attacked before the game? the refs were paid off ?/ please what else.....

What a dumbazz...obviously, this sunuvabitch has never watched football before.
    • Steven  •  Kenosha, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
nobody even considers that tom laughlin flat out and straight up OUT~COACHED bill belichek once again and thus deserves his own name added to the list above . yes each and every one of the players considered for M.V.P. had their own significant input and impacted the game. but the coach called the game plan and had THAT game in control. and DEFINATELY owned the fourth quarter...

The only "ring" the Patriots will get is a wrapper off of a cigar.

Eli's great, but it was Tuck's MVP. He was the most dominant player of any player in the Super Bowl.

As for the Patriots, this was payback for Underwood being cut the night before. I think they could have used a receiver who could have caught one of those critical passes instead of an extra D-lineman that Belichick chose, but Brady didn't exactly distinguish himself throwing that first pass to no one and registering a safety, did he Giselle? If not for those 2 points Brady gave up, the Pats would be driving for either a tie or the win.

I really disagree with Eli winning the game MVP, I really appreciate that Steve Weatherford is on the list above, the results of his punts were something that helped the defense create their big plays.

I think they should have given it to someone on defense. Unfortunately there was no one player with the "statistics" but I think I'd give the award to JPP or Tuck, or maybe even both. It's been done before, Super Bowl XII. Eli played a good game, but the defense is the real reason they won.

David Tyree's catch was not 'something wacky that just happened'. It was a perfectly timed jump and an amazing effort of concentration to hang on to the ball. The Manningham play was also really good, but it's a catch you see at least once or twice a game if you're watching any game with good receivers.

You forgot the Pats in your list of valuable players on the Giants win. Tom Brady for chocking in true Hollywood style, Wes Welker for throwing away millions on his new crack under pressure venture with his partners Branch and Hernandez and last but not least to Coach Bill for calling all of those horrible plays... The Pats have FOREVER sealed their fate as a team of posers who can play better than anyone so long as no one's looking... Under pressure they crack and fall away like little kids...
      • dogfish 3 months ago
Nice spelling of choke too, in typical New York fashion.....you chocked on spellcheck....idiot

Tom Brady has shown his Human and Emotional side. a great person. The media and Giants should learn from him and learn to Respect other person. The Nasty talk from Press is unfortunate. Pats will beat Giants and Giants won by Fluke. there are not going to win next time.
