Technically Dan Rooney isn't a member of the press. Thirty-five year president, chariman and owner of a team that has won six Super Bowls, yes. Member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, yes. Ambassador to Ireland, yes. Guy with a plastic credential to sit in the massive press box at New Meadowlands Stadium? Sorry.
The Pittsburgh Steelers chairman was kicked out of the press box during his team's preseason game against the New York Giants this weekend after he failed to show a credential. The 78-year old was ordered to return to his private box, for which he had a ticket, reported Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
In typical, understated Rooney fashion, the ambassador left without lodging any complaint.
Bouchette says that Rooney frequently drops by the press box to chat with writers. The owner had flown back from Ireland for one day to watch his team play.
