Before Sunday, it would have been tough to figure out how a quarterback could get called for holding.
Peyton Manning showed the way.
Ryan Kerrigan of the Redskins got a hand on the ball. The ball flew out of Manning's hands to the left, and Manning saw that Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo was going to recover the fumble. So he did what he had to do.The Broncos quarterback got pressure from his right side, and
Manning grabbed Orakpo from behind and tried to wrestle him down as the ball was free on the ground. Manning eventually got the Redskins' outside linebacker down on the ground, the Redskins recovered anyway, and Manning got called for a holding penalty.
Manning on getting penalized for holding. "I didn't even think you could call that."— Lindsay Jones (@bylindsayhjones) October 28, 2013
The Broncos were struggling when this turnover happened, and they fell behind 21-7 in the third quarter. Denver rallied back in a big way, scoring 38 unanswered points, including 31 in the third quarter, to win 45-21 and improve to 7-1. Manning led the comeback, of course.
Through his great career, Manning has done many things we had never seen before. This one goes on the list too, though a holding penalty is probably not going to be on his Hall-of-Fame resume.
