Here at Shutdown Corner, we want to help. So once a week, we'll go in and examine a team coming off a bad week, bad month, maybe a bad decade (you're in luck, Cleveland), and see what fixes can be made to turn around the season. So step aside, we've got this. Next under the microscope: the Minnesota Vikings.
Current status: 1-5, dead last in the NFC North.
What's gone right: Well, the Vikings have a win, which keeps them from the dreaded 0-16 conversation. But that's about it. And that win didn't even come in this hemisphere, as Minnesota took out the equally winless-at-the-time Steelers in London. On the plus side, Minnesota is now undefeated on the continent of Europe.
What's gone wrong: Only anything wearing a purple helmet. The defense is among the worst in the league, ranking 27th in yards surrendered. The offense is only marginally better, ranking 25th overall and 24th in passing. And when you've got Adrian Peterson on your team, ranking 19th in rushing is damn near a war crime. The quarterback situation is a garbage fire. Other than that, everything's great.
What we'd fix: The man under center. The Vikings made the right move by picking up Josh Freeman, who's an upgrade over Christian Ponder. The problem was, they rushed Freeman into the lineup before he was ready, got him overmatched and concussed on Monday night, and may very well have shattered his confidence beyond repair. Combine that with the fact that Ponder got benched on short notice, so he's a mess, and, well ... there isn't much to build on, is there? Hell, trade Peterson away for a raft of draft picks and go for a rebuilding year. Or half-decade.
The road ahead: The Vikings' next five games include Green Bay twice, Seattle, Washington, and Dallas. It is entirely possible that the Vikings will be underdogs in every single one of their final 10 games. In other words, as ugly as it is now, it's going to get worse.
Is there hope?: No. Sorry, Minnesota fans. There's nothing in the immediate future that looks promising. Perhaps you can get in on the "Play Dead for Ted" sweepstakes for Teddy Bridgewater. Beyond that, we can't help you.
