Seattle Seahawks fans will seek to break Guinness record for stadium noise

Like most football teams, the Seattle Seahawks have a rabid 12th-man fan contingent called "Volume 12." And like most fan contingents, Volume 12 wants to carve its name, or at least the name of its team, into history. And how does it plan to do that?

Why, by generating the loudest stadium noise of all time, of course.

Here's the plan: during the Seahawks' Sept. 15 home opener against San Francisco at CenturyLink Field, Volume 12 wants to break the world record for loudest stadium noise. The current record is 131.76 decibels, set on March 18, 2011 during a soccer match at the Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Seahawks fans have a ways to go to catch that. The highest they've hit, per the team, is 112 decibels. For perspective, 110 dB starts to cause pain. A chainsaw is 120 dB. And 130 dB is about equivalent to a jet taking off from an aircraft carrier. At 150 dB, your eardrum ruptures, which is really probably not what the Seahawks want to have happen.

The Guinness Book of World Records has signed off on Volume 12's attempt. Provided the stadium both hits the mark and files its data properly, we'll have a new Guinness record.

So get loud, Seattle fans. Your team's going to need it to get past Colin Kaepernick.
