Ryan Fitzpatrick on getting released: ‘It stinks’

Ryan Fitzpatrick, woeful year and all, was still a starting quarterback in the NFL last season. Such players don't usually get cut loose, but Fitzpatrick did, and here we are. How does it feel to get cut, Ryan?

That's an actual quote, though not in Fitzpatrick's voice. Here's the full one, from a Fitzpatrick interview on WGR-AM: "It stinks. I really did enjoy being a Buffalo Bill, and unfortunately we couldn't get anything worked out."

Fitzpatrick did note that he was pleased that possible restructuring discussions were private, between himself and Bills GM Buddy Nix ... well, private until a conversation between Nix and Tampa Bay GM Mark Dominik leaked. In that conversation, Nix had this to say about Fitzpatrick:

"We're still struggling here with our quarterback," Nix said. "We're not really struggling--he's going to have to do something, or we'll have to ... We just can't afford to pay that kind of money for a guy who's fighting for probably a backup job."

The Bills were on the hook for more than $10 million to Fitzpatrick in 2013, which is not the kind of coin you want to dish out to a guy who posted an uninspiring 6-10 record. As a Harvard man, he was smart enough to read the writing on the wall. He won't be out of a job for long, but still ... kind of stinks how it all went down.
