The Green Bay Packers saw their last 20 years of quarterbacking in their 45-38 win over the San Diego Chargers. Aaron Rodgers played like Aaron Rodgers, and Philip Rivers played like Brett Favre. While Rodgers kept up his streak of ridiculously efficient performances by throwing for one more incompletion (five) than he had touchdowns (four), Rivers maintained his own extremely spiky efficiency by throwing four touchdown passes of his own — it's just that his four scores were buttressed by two pick-sixes in the first quarter...
and the interception that sealed the game for Green Bay with just seconds left.
Those two interceptions gave Rivers a total of six in his last three games, and the pick he threw to Charlie Peprah as he was trying to drive the Chargers downfield to tie the game with time running out marked the second time in the last calendar week that his turnover absolutely sealed a Chargers loss. Rivers' fumbled snap against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night allowed for that result, and now, that which was known all around the league was proven again. If you make too many mistakes against a team run by Aaron Rodgers, you have no chance at all.
While Rivers' upside was the result of scrambling to get back to the middle, Rodgers looked about as calm and ruthless as he has all season. His 64-yard pass to Jordy Nelson in the fourth quarter gave him one pass of at least 60 yards in each of his last five games.
Rodgers hit seven different receivers, and added 52 rushing yards on eight attempts. There just isn't much you can do to stop the man at this point, and the dichotomy between Rodgers and Rivers could be illustrated by this one statistic: Rodgers has thrown as many interceptions all season as Rivers threw in this game.
The 8-0 Packers next welcome the Minnesota Vikings to Lambeau Field for Monday Night Football, while the 4-4 Chargers have very little time to get over this one — they face the Oakland Raiders on the 2011 debut of Thursday Night Football on the NFL Network, giving Rivers and his team their third game in 11 days.
