Robert Griffin III blows away combine with 40 time

Robert Griffin III showed why scouts and teams are salivating over his skills for the upcoming NFL draft. The Heisman Trophy winner ran the fastest 40-yard dash by a quarterback at this year's NFL scouting combine.

Griffin was unofficially clocked with a two-run average of 4.38 seconds. His official time was a 4.41.

The Baylor product's early time was ranked in the top five of all players at midmorning. The best overall time Sunday was a 4.30, turned in by Georgia Tech receiver Stephen Hill. The other three players who bested Griffin in the 40 were also wide receivers.

Griffin was a track star at Baylor. He placed third in the NCAA in the 400-meter hurdles and qualified for the 2008 Olympic trials.

Andrew Luck, the Heisman runner-up and favorite to be the No. 1 pick, later ran twice, getting clocked at 4.66 and 4.59.

It is widely believed that Griffin III will be the second quarterback taken behind Luck. With his scintillating performance in the 40, a time he predicted earlier in the week, that order may be in doubt. Did RGIII just run himself into the No. 1 pick?

I still can't believe I served with his father, (96th Trans, Fort Hood) back in the 90s. They were good people, his parents. From hearing RG3 speak over the last few months, seems they did a lot right with him. Congrats to him and his entire family.

Lots of respect for this young man. Looks to have his head on straight. For that alone I wish him the best of luck, opportunity. If he gets a chance, he will make the best of it.

Sounds like a LOT of parents can borrow some of their philosophies. Good for them!

It was a great 40...and considering he is 6'2 and 220 that pretty awesome. But what about that kid from GT 6'4 215 running a 4.30! If he shows good hands he just moved up half a round!!
      • Michael M 2 months ago
RGIII is barely six feet tall, but who is counting. Well, other than the NFL scouts. It is an amazing time, but let's remember that some of the best quarterbacks ever were not fleet of foot. I do think RGIII will be successful, but it will be because of his arm and not his legs. Sure, he can make something out of nothing, but Mike Vick proved that you have to be able to throw downfield in the NFL and not just run around.

He didnt look that big in the matchup against Washington... but who knows. I give him 6'1 1/4 and 214 1/4 hehe

He doesn't need to catch to get drafted high... see Troy Williamson, Darius Heyward-Bey, etc...

To be a quality NFL QB, you MUST be very intelligent and must be able to make all the throws (outs & deep patterns) - RG3 will be a great QB. Speed comes into play when a QB has a poor O-line and premier speed at the QB position, COMBINED with a great arm and a great intellect, that speed is a huge game-changer. RG3 is also much more accurate than Vick was when Vick came out of college.

True story. My dad is a Baylor grad/season ticket holder so I've seen a good deal of this kid's games. He is a fantastic passer with a great arm and makes good decisions. He just happens to also have world class speed.
      • joe z 2 months ago
Hes probably more accurate than Vick now lol

he IS more accurate than vick now. RG3 shattered records this past year. his long ball and his accuracy are AMAZING

Don't dog on this dude. He is a man of faith, a 4.0 student that GRADUATED in 3 years,(not in African American Studies) and has had that dew since highschool. Google it.

Just so you know it's 'do(short of hairdo) and anyway have to agree that he deserves credit for what he's done. Only pointing out the error because I was like what dew at first.

Forget about dew/do, I am wondering what "I was like what dew at first" is.

So this guy is a track star who qualified for the Olympic trials, yet we're supposed to believe that NFL scouts were "surprised" to find out that he's fast? Gimme a break...
    • TV_Pete  •  2 months ago
      Peyton Manning didn't have a great a 40-yard dash. I think 40-yard dash is over-rated, especially for QB's.

It's not overrated. RG3 can play QB in the pocket, but he has dimension to his game that only a fool wouldn't want.
      • Tim S 2 months ago
40 time is overrated as a combine stat. But this kid can play. (And by that I mean pass and make smart decisions).
      • robert g 2 months ago
How has that "dismension" worked out for Michael Vick? I am guessing Tom Brady's 40 time was even slower then P Manninings and I would take him over a running QB any day.
    • Unkle Ruckus  •  2 months ago
Everybody in here is jumping to conclusions.....the coaches aren't putting RG3 ahead of Luck because of his running...they're just flat out impressed with his speed in general. The bowl game he took Baylor to last month had already showed off his running ability, so this 40 time shouldn't be so shocking to most.

Rams, Trade the #2 to Cleveland and use those two 1st round picks on Blackmon and a Linebacker.

his running will be his legacy, if that tells you anything

Some of these comments are stupid. RG3 is fast, super accurate, throws the best long abll in all CFB, elusive and also happens to be super smart. His release is noticeably faster than any other QB in the draft. If he were 6'6 he'd be a sure fire number 1 overrall pick. Luck is awesome but the only thing he has on RG3 is size. Has nothing to do with black or white. Also the sole reason their are very few black QB's is that most black athletes possess better speed and athleticism than whites ( not all but most, lets be honest), that means they usually end up at speed positions ie WR, RB, DE etc. Thats not a knock on whites athleticism its just simply true.

Right, like his forty time should have been a real shock to anyone.

Who cares what 40 time a QB has?
Running is not what NFL teams look for in their QB.
    • OBAMINATION  •  2 months ago
This kid is a class act, he has numerous accomplishments both athletic and academic not to mention a good head on his shoulders. I wish him all the best in his career. May it be long and successful.

It's unfortunate that a majority of the comments here have to be RACE RELATED, and it's obvious a lot of people here need to grow the he|| up. Griffin is an eloquent, intelligent, and gifted young man, and personally I hope he does well in the NFL, and as a WHITE Colts fan I wouldn't be upset at all if they picked RGIII instead of Luck, But the MAIN reason Luck is considered the OVERALL #1 is his experience, and ability to run the show from the pocket, similar to P. Manning, the system Indy has had in place for over a decade is more geared for a Luck type of QB (IE pocket passer) but myself and many other experts have said time and time again that depending on the systems in place EITHER QB would be the #1, like I said it's unfortunate that so many slack-jawed imbeciles (both black AND white) have to boil everything down to a COLOR. Wake up idiots, both youngsters are going to be Great football players, Regardless of the color of their skin.

      Whats Eli's time in the 40 ??
    • jason  •  Norfolk, Virginia  •  2 months ago
he might be fast but didnt run a 4.12 like bo jackson did....now thats fast!!!
    • JeffN  •  Colorado Springs, Colorado  •  2 months ago
Hey he is quick, but who cares. Is he able to throw down field and stand in the pocket and pick apart a defense. I could give a rats a-- how fast he is!!
    • Carlos  •  Racine, Wisconsin  •  2 months ago
speed isnt what makes an nfl QB, although it does help. He'll still be #2.
    • Charles  •  2 months ago
Scouts and teams salivating over his skills! Drive by media at it again! So he can run fast that is a skill( singular not plural)! I barely passed my English class but I did glean that truth! Can he throw? Ironic, Tim Tebow can win a Hiesman trophy and lead his team to national championship game yet media says he is not NFL material!!! OH! Thats right he talks about Jesus and God like Palin, Cain,Huckabee,Perry, Bachmann, Santorium etc......
