Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were roundly criticized for not giving Tom Brady enough wide receiver help last season with the exodus of Wes Welker, the injury to Rob Gronkowski and the release of Aaron Hernandez.

It was not for a lack of trying, if CSN New England's Tom Curran's report is accurate.

Fitzgerald stayed with the Arizona Cardinals and helped them to an 10-6 mark, and even if that was not good enough for a playoff appearance, they were one of the biggest surprises in the NFL under new head coach Bruce Arians.

Although the deal did not happen, it's fun to think about what Fitzgerald, who turns 31 in August, could have done for Brady, alongside Julian Edelman and a strong run game. Maybe the Patriots would have had enough offensive juice to make it to the Super Bowl instead of the Denver Broncos — who knows?

That said, any potential deal for Fitzgerald happening this year seems far-fetched. The Patriots might still need help at receiver, but his salary-cap figure goes up significantly from last season to this coming season, and the Cardinals appear to want their best wideout to remain with the team.
