Ravens gamble and lose with first fake field goal attempt in Super Bowl history

Shutdown Corner

After an Ed Reed interception, the Baltimore Ravens found themselves at 4th and 9 on the San Francisco 14. Kicker Justin Tucker lined up for the field goal, went through his pre-kick routine — and then ran the first fake field goal attempt in Super Bowl history.

Tucker ran eight yards before being stopped by the San Francisco 49ers special teams. Unfortunately, the Ravens needed nine yards to keep their drive alive.

With good field position and a healthy lead, the fake field goal was a low risk move for the Ravens. The 49ers punted on the next drive, and the Ravens scored with a Jacoby Jones touchdown on Baltimore's next possession. San Francisco ended the first half with a field goal, making the halftime score 21-6.
