Matt Elam will negotiate his own rookie deal (USA Today Sports Images)
According to multiple reports, Baltimore Ravens first-round safety Matt Elam does not plan to hire an agent at this time and will negotiate his own rookie contract.
Going without an agent is highly unorthodox, but Elam has the benefit of a support system that includes his older brother Abram Elam. The elder Elam is a free-agent safety who has played 104 games for the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs during a seven-year NFL career that has included not one...not two...not three...but five different agents.
In April, Abram Elam explained why his younger brother did not need an agent before the draft to Darren Heitner of Forbes
"Not to discredit any agent, but Matt has done the things to put himself in a position to have a high draft grade without an agent," said Abe Elam to FORBES. "There is no contract right now to be evaluated because he hasn’t been drafted yet. At some point we will have to address whether Matt should hire an agent or an attorney. We are not biased against agents; we have just been able to delay the process because of the resources he has."
Matt Elam, a standout at Florida who was the No. 31 player in the "Shutdown 50," was selected with the No. 32 pick in the 2013 NFL draft.
Based on his draft slot, Elam's four-year rookie contract will be worth around $6.8 million and will include around $5.4 million in guaranteed money, including a $3,301,456 signing bonus. By negotiating his own contract, we assume with the aide of an attorney, Matt Elam will save about $200,000 in agent fees over the next four seasons — including up to $111,194 in 2013.
Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that Elam's rookie deal is expected to be finalized by the time Ravens rookie report to training camp on July 21.
