Panthers receiver Steve Smith rips reporter, and rightfully so, after dumb question

The reporter who asked Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith a question after his team’s 23-10 playoff loss against San Francisco probably wishes he kept his mouth shut.

Smith had a knee injury, but managed to play in Carolina’s first playoff game since the 2008 season. He finished with four catches for 74 yards and one touchdown during the loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Although Smith was disappointed, he spoke with reporters after the game. That is when one reporter, for some odd reason, asked Smith if he would be rooting for the Seattle Seahawks over the 49ers in the NFC championship game.

Huh?

“You really want me to thump you upside the head?,” Smith said (via NFL.com). “That was the dumbest question, and that's the second dumbest question you've asked. I only cheer for one team. Actually, two teams. My team and my kid's team. Other than that I can give a bleep.”

Ice up, son.

Sometimes reporters are unsure what to ask after a disappointing loss, but the good ones approach those situations with caution. You cannot shy away from tough questions, like what occurred during a key turnover, but some inquiries are not necessary. The only thing worse would have been asking Smith if the loss gave him more time to work on his golf game.

If Smith is rooting for anything, he probably hopes to never see that reporter again.
