Merry Christmas, New Orleans Saints fans. Your quarterback has popped up on the injury list this week with a previously unreported knee injury.
Drew Brees was limited in practice with a knee injury, one that hadn't been discussed by Brees or head coach Sean Payton up to Wednesday's official announcement. It's not clear if Brees suffered the injury in the Saints' Week 16 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
The Saints are in a win-and-in situation in Sunday's home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who might be playing for head coach Greg Schiano's job at this point. The Panthers are gunning for the NFC South title, and can clinch it with a win, but the Saints can rise all the way up to the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a victory, and a Panthers loss.
But is Brees' knee a worry? It doesn't appear so right now. He participated in the portion of practice that was open to the media and almost certainly will not miss Sunday's game. Brees hasn't been on the injury list — for a knee or anything else, for that matter — prior to this week. Chalk this up as a late-season ache or pain.
The Saints have too much on the line to think Brees can't go in this one.
