Radar Online published a pretty explosive story from rookie Giants rookie receiver Odell Beckham's fiancee, with tales of a love child Beckham fathered and his affairs with strippers. It was a pretty incredible and detailed story, and the details might be so amazing because the story was apparently made up. Maybe.
Beckham, the Giants' first-round pick from LSU, said he's never even met the woman who claimed to be his fiancee, according to the New York Post.
“The entire story is fabricated. I have never been engaged. I don’t have any children. And I have never met this person who is making these claims,” Beckham said in a statement, according to the Post.
But wait, there's more. Mendez said she and Beckham are in a relationship, but she wasn't the one who talked to Radar Online.
“I am completely disheartened by this turn of events and it has placed a toll on Odell and (my) personal relationship,” she said, according to the New York Daily News. “I have a deep love for the Beckham family and I'm truly disgusted by the claims Radaronline.com has made against me, which I will be taking legal action against.”
There are plenty of stories of NFL players being victims of scams of all kinds, but this one is just strange.
Someone is lying, obviously. It's hard to believe Beckham knows the woman but got the team and NFL Security involved anyway. Odell Beckham's father told the New York Post that the family is hiring a private investigator to track Mendez down. If the Giants rookie does know her, he just made things a heck of a lot worse. Whoever talked to Radar Online produced multiple text messages that were supposedly between the two. A picture of Beckham and Mendez together could not be found online, but during an appearance earlier this month on "The Tonight Show," host Jimmy Fallon introduces Beckham (at about 2:04 of the clip) by saying he is engaged to a model. Mendez describes herself as a model on her site.
She touted herself as "Soon to be Mrs. Beckham" on her deleted Twitter account (h/t to SB Nation for the screen grab). The Big Lead's post on Beckham and Mendez was posted on May 10, 10 days before the Radar Online story, claiming the two were engaged. The site FrontPageBuzz.com also tweeted about the relationship on May 10:
Weird enough for you yet?
Based on the Daily News story, Mendez is still sticking to her story that she and Beckham have a relationship. She (or someone) claimed in the Radar Online story that he had taken her on trips to Paris and London and bought her a BMW, which should have been a red flag to the site considering Beckham was preparing for the NFL draft since the college season ended and didn't make BMW and foreign vacation type of money before that.
Something is incredibly off with this story. Again, it's almost inconceivable that Beckham would get the NFL involved if he really knew the woman making these claims. At very least it's a signal to Beckham that life in the NFL, especially in New York, is a whole different world.
