"The Buffalo Bills today are announcing that Chan Gailey has been relieved of his duties as the team's head coach."

That's it. That's the entirety of the Buffalo Bills' statement on their coaching situation. Simple, efficient, effective. That  makes it a marked contrast with the three years of Chan Gailey's tenure in Buffalo.

Gailey (whose name unfortunately autocorrects to "Failed" on an iPhone) went 16-32 in his three seasons, including two straight years of 6-10. Gailey's biggest problem was his defense; he had three different defensive coordinators during his tenure, but the Bills still finished 26th in points allowed. That's not the way to keep your job.

It wasn't just Gailey, the onetime Cowboys and Georgia Tech head coach, who got the boot, however; the entire Bills coaching staff has apparently been released. Gailey also hitched his wagon to quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who suffered criticism throughout the year for his erratic play. Still as yet uncertain: the status of general manager Buddy Nix, who brought Gailey into Buffalo in the first place.

You kids out there may not believe this, but there was once a time when the Bills were the dominant force in the NFL, going to four straight Super Bowls. Of course, they lost all four, but still ... they were there. Buffalo has now gone 13 straight years without a playoff berth, the longest streak in the NFL.
