NFL teams now clamoring to move up for Robert Griffin III

Andrew Luck's #1 position may be cinched, but RGIII's stock is seriously rising. (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS -- We can only assume that Robert Griffin III's mega-impressive performance at the podium during the scouting combine was repeated when the Baylor quarterback interviewed with NFL teams this week. And if that's the case, teams would then go back and watch tape of a player who completed over 72 percent of his passes and led the nation in yards per pass in 2011. Given those speculations, it's no surprise that the drumbeat is getting louder every day from teams looking to package a huge purse of draft picks together and move up to the #2 spot -- currently owned by the St. Louis Rams -- for the services of the quarterback everybody believes will be the pick right after Andrew Luck.

According to Mike Freeman of CBS Sports, at least three teams -- the Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, and Seattle Seahawks -- are seriously considering moving up to pluck RGIII out of the draft pool in late April.

The Redskins' interest was made public by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, who spilled the beans to a fan, who then posted the news on the excellent Redskins blog, Hogs Haven. If you were somehow able to combine the skills of Rex Grossman and John Beck, the resulting Frankenstein quarterback would still not match the talents of Griffin. The need is set.

The Dolphins could still be looking very seriously at Green Bay's Matt Flynn -- Flynn is about to hit the open market and new head coach Joe Philbin was on Green Bay's staff for a good, long time -- and they could also be in the hunt for Peyton Manning if the future Hall-of-Famer can play after a series of neck surgeries and the recovery of the nerve impingements in his right arm. But a team that has built a lot of the pieces around a quarterback could do a lot worse than trade up for Griffin.

That's also the case for the Seahawks. General manager John Schneider said this week that he's far more interested in quarterbacks who have been athletic through their careers, and the guys who go to all the passing camps make him a little nervous. Since Manning actually runs his own passing academy, and Schneider also said that he's wary of throwing a lot of guaranteed money at a quarterback who makes you unsure, we'll assume that the Seahawks aren't in the hunt for #18. The Seahawks put their future in the hands of Tarvaris Jackson in 2011, and though Jackson performed reasonably well in the face of a rebuilding offense and his own injuries, Griffin's quite a few floors up in terms of talent, skill set, and potential.

Factor in the Cleveland Browns as well. All of these teams mentioned have first picks in the top 12, but the Browns sit at number 4 with a team president (Mike Holmgren with Seneca Wallace) and offensive coordinator (Brad Childress with Tarvaris Jackson) who have serious experience transitioning super-fast quarterbacks able to operate roll-right versions of the West Coast offense.

There are a lot of options, but the one thing we do know is that there are many teams, and many analysts who used to make those NFL decisions, in love with Griffin's potential -- on and off the field. During his Saturday media session, former Baltimore Ravens head coach and current NFL Network and FOX Sports analyst Brian Billick gushed about RGIII.

"I'm very intrigued by him," Billick said. "We tend to clump players together. So any time you talk about an athletic quarterback — Oh, he's this. He's counter to that. This is the best. When you talk about the Michael Vicks or the Cam Newtons or the athletic quarterbacks, this is the best throwing athlete I've seen come out in a while. Far better than Michael Vick in my opinion. Far better than Cam Newton. I'm not going to say the T word [Tebow] here. [NFL Network draft guru] Mike Mayock will get mad at me if I say the T word. Very intrigued. This guy has as pure a throwing motion for an athletic quarterback [as you will see]. Clearly, he has the intelligence to transition. Very intrigued with his potential in the NFL. He will translate into the NFL very well."

There seems to be very little question about that. The only question is, which team will mortgage a good part of at least one draft to get that rarest and most valuable of draft commodities -- the quarterback who could turn a team around?

As a long time Bengals fan used to quarterback hype I can say two things: Akili Smith and David Klingler.
      • McDigger7 2 months ago
I agree 100%. I think RG3 is the second coming of Akili Smith.
      • bareskinsfan 2 months ago
and what do you base your brilliant judgement on? Akili's completion rates in college: 54% and 58 % this is REALLY bad. Also he had character and academic problems. Sorry McDigger you really can't compare these two QB's

For a pocket passer, you need five offensive linemen. For a scrambler/running QB you need one or two to protect the blind side. With those other three positions you can look to improve your receivers.

Cam Newton didn't have a strong O-line last year and look what he was able to do. He made the time in the pocket and as the season went on he made better decisions and reads. They won four of their last six. They were in almost every game.

If you can't afford all the pieces for a pocket passer, one that buys you time with his feet isn't so bad. McNabb got to a Super Bowl that way. Fran Tarkenton got to three.
      • David 2 months ago
Unfortunately McNabb and Tarkenton lost all those Super Bowls. It just goes to show you need all the other playmakers at running back and wide receiver to win the big game.

Newton also had 17 interceptions and 5 fumbles

LBs are so fast in NFL that a running Qb needs 5 OL or he will get killed... One reason Tebow won a few games at Denver was that the OL protected him. (And Denver's D).... Put RG3 with the Rams and he will have same results or worse results as Bradford...

He is NOT a running QB - He is NOT a running QB! He is a pure passer who can run when needed. A 4.4 40 is irrelevant - He is NOT a running QB. He has a great arm with good accuracy and good throwing much and a relatively quick release and he makes good decisions. I think he has more potential than Newton but not more than Luck.
      • Otto 2 months ago
He ran for over 600 yards. He does run way too much
      • Football Guru 2 months ago
He actually doesn't run all that much. Early in his career he ran all the time but the last two years many people were questioning why he didn't run MORE. A better description would be that he is a pure hybrid that can be both a great running QB and a great throwing QB. He may not be a running QB, but he is certainly not a pocket passer either. He may be the first true hybrid of an elite runner and polished passer.
Even if he is not a "running" QB, the 4.4 40 is still very relevant. If he only runs 3-4 times a game but one those runs is for 20-30 yards, makes big difference versus guys that are lucky to barely get back to the line. He will also be much better at escaping the pass rush and throwing on the run (which is how he beat OU).

These discussions should not even occur until free agency starts. If Washington ends up with Manning, and Flynn goes to the dolphins then they dont need RG3. And who is to say my brownies wont go for Flynn themselves. P.S. Dont forget about the AZ cardinals.
      • Bergertime 2 months ago
Dnt forget about next years draft either.
      • Jenny 2 months ago
i hope our brownies go for flynn. flynn or rglll could be busts but at least flynn wont cost 2 first round picks to boot.
      • joe 2 months ago
I wouldnt mind trading for RG3 if all we had to do was give up our 4th and 2nd rd pick. But I mean we have too many holes to give up our 2nd first round pick. Hopefully the rams are bluffing and maybe draft Blackmon so RG3 falls to us. But I still trust in Colt if we give him Blackmon. If colt still sucks then Bergertime is right. There is next years draft. Look at what cicni did. AJ Green made Dalton pretty #$%$ good. Why couldnt Blackmon do that for McCoy.

I have been a pats my whole life and lived in New England. i remember way back when the draft of 93, the pats got a very good quarterback in Drew bledsoe, and Chris Berman said so often in sports center common baby light my mirer. A more lopsided draft was 98, Manning went number 1 and is going to Canton, and until he played the chiefs in week 5 and self destructed some thought Ryan Leaf might have been better but thats life in San Diego, just ask New Orleans Drew Brees. Then you look at the 2004, 2 of the three quarterbacks have 2 superbowl rings, out of the two of em, Tom Coughlin being a former BC Eagles head coach doesnt bother me. But San Diego got the number 1 in Manning he said he didnt want to play for them, went to New York got 2 superbowls, they got phillip rivers, who excelled in Marty Ball. Im sorry I just wont buy Norv Turner is a better coach than Marty the other 2 rings went to the one guy u dont want to meet in a bathroom stall in big Ben. Living in New England all hail Bill preaches QB Accuracy, and 72% for the season and 4.3 speed are u kidding me let the Rams have Luck.

What the hell are you talking about? You should read what you type before posting because this rambling just goes on and on and on and never actually comes close to reaching a point.
      • David 2 months ago
Some coaches are just coordinators and some coaches are real head coaches. Norv Turner is a coordinator but in 3 opportunities, now, he hasn't proven he's a head coach. Tom Coughlin couldn't do much when he was head coach at Jacksonville. His players quit on him because they said he was too demanding. But since he's been the Giants head coach he's proven he's the real deal with 2 Super Bowl wins both over New England.

as a rams fan i loved seeing RG3 having a great day now the rams need to parley that into multiple picks
    • Ian  •  2 months ago
Biggest concern for RGIII is his size and injury history. He's torn his knee once and is a much more slender build than Newton. As a scrambling QB that may pose issues down the line. He's a great athlete, a model student and was raised in a military family, so he won't fail for lack of talent or for being a headcase. I could definitely see his career ending over an injury though.

Rams will draft rg3 and trade the big salary and oft injured bradford to skins for their 1st round ,2nd round and 4th round picks
    • Can Am FL  •  2 months ago
I think if the Rams really wanted to milk their pick for as much as possible in a trade, they should think of picking up some experienced players and not just draft picks.
    • SandbagSix  •  2 months ago
I wonder if Mike Ditka would trade an entire draft for RG3.
    • Tom  •  Dover, New Jersey  •  2 months ago
much different in the pro's. the later later round guys do better because they are often counted out and looked at as not so talented so they have more to prove. problem is it's hard to know who will be the one or two who will transition well into the NFL. who thought Brady would win 3 Super Bowl's.
    • Overcome  •  2 months ago
Maybe, just maybe with new leadership and decision-makers the Rams will manage to trade this pick for a bunch of tope picks the next couple drafts and set up Bradford and this team for the future. It'd be niceto turn on the TV on Sundays and have a realistic expectation of being within double digits or god-forbid actually WIN some games.
    • Broken Trolley 4  •  2 months ago
The Rams can just about name their price for the second draft pick. You are assured of getting one or the other, Luck or RG3. But what price will you half to pay ?????

      Good fit for Seahawks !
    • wadetm72  •  Charlotte, North Carolina  •  2 months ago
the rams are not going to take RG3 with the second pick unless there is a really dumb team out there that is going to take on a huge Sam Bradford contract. dont see that happening at all. Bradford is a good QB but needs more pieces around him and trading the second pick away is the only thing that is logical.
    • amack  •  2 months ago
Looks pretty good, but this does look awfully similar to the draft with peyton manning and ryan leaf as the top 2 prospects, and look how that played out. Guaranteed money dosen't always mean guaranteed success
    • Joe  •  2 months ago
I pick him over luck and am not convinced Luck is a lock at #1. If indy keeps Manning and gets RG3 they could really play them together. RG3 would do well sitting 1 year and listening to Manning. It would be the best for him. He will not make the playoffs with Washington. Seattle could make a push. My top 3 are RG3 then Richardson then Luck. All three are smart players the first two are just plain stronger and faster.
    • Collin  •  2 months ago
I'll be #$%$ if the Vikings (if somehow he isn't picked 2nd, we have 3rd pick) would take him just for lols. We need a lot of other things clearly, Christian Ponder had a fairly good rookie year for us. But the Vikings sadly enough for a fan of them like me do not draft particularly intelligently so... I guess we could trade the pick if we got something REALLY good in return, because we need as many picks as we can get. I'm sure everyone here knows how bad the Vikings currently are in most areas...
