Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has to be just as confused as some people when it comes to understanding NFL rules.

The NFL has a long of NFL rules designed to protect its players. Player safety is one of the most important points of emphasis by commissioner Roger Goodell. If a player repeatedly violates safety rules, he can be fined $100,000 for an illegal hit, like Detroit’s Ndamukong Suh.

Griffin sustained a well-documented knee injury last season, and his rehabilitation was consistently chronicled prior to Washington’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. The quarterback wore a protective brace to guard his knee, but NFL officials had issues with how Griffin wore it during the game, according to

"Everybody in the league kept calling down to our sideline saying that I didn't cover the brace up," Griffin said. "I don't understand that one, but that's why we had to continue to do some stuff to cover the brace up with my sock … I don't know what the league's doing. I got fined 10 grand for a shirt, so I don't know.”

However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday’s incident was a simple case of miscommunication.

The good news is Griffin avoided getting injured despite the restrictive nature of the sock last night. While it is uncomfortable to play with a knee brace, it had to be even harder with a sock over it.

Washington may have lost the game, but considering the Green Bay and San Francisco officiating snafu, plus Monday’s incident, those required to enforce NFL rules had a rough outing in Week 1.
