You know NFL teams are over-thinking things heading into free agency when quarterback Matt Cassel is a hot topic.

The Vikings had Cassel last year, and he was mediocre. That's not surprising because he has been mediocre for most of his career. But once there were reports that the Houston Texans wanted to sign him, the Vikings acted. Why? Who knows. But they made sure they didn't lose Cassel, re-signing him to a two-year deal.

And, for the privilege of having Cassel back, Minnesota gave him $10 million over those two years according to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.

Figure that one out.

And consider this: If the Texans had signed Cassel, it might have caused them to feel OK enough about their quarterback situation to draft someone like defensive end Jadeveon Clowney or offensive tackle Greg Robinson first overall, and not a quarterback. And maybe, just maybe, that would have led to one of the top quarterbacks falling to the eighth pick ... where the quarterback-needy Vikings are picking.

Oh, but the Vikings are set at quarterback, right? They have Christian Ponder, who threw for seven touchdowns and nine interceptions last year. And they'll also have Cassel, who over the last three seasons has 27 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. You can just feel the excitement in Minnesota.

Is it too late for Adrian Peterson to request a trade?
