Any NFL fan planning to descend upon the New York-New Jersey area for Super Bowl XLVIII should keep their coats and gloves in a convenient place after the game.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton and the Vikings announced they intend to pursue Super Bowl LII, which occurs on February 4, 2018. The Vikings’ new stadium is slated to open in 2016, and much like this year’s Super Bowl, the NFL could award its game to Minnesota for building a new facility.

“The Super Bowl is the most watched annual event in the world,” Dayton said (via the Vikings’ website). “In addition to game attendees, it brings over 100,000 people to the host community for a weeklong celebration. Hosting the Super Bowl would bring enormous economic benefits to many Minnesota businesses, as well as provide a terrific opportunity to again showcase Minnesota to the world.”

Unlike MetLife Stadium, Minnesota plays in a dome, and there will likely not be as many complaints about the weather. Detroit was awarded Super Bowl XL in 2006 after building a new stadium, but Ford Field is an indoor facility.

In addition, Houston, Dallas and Indianapolis were previously awarded Super Bowls after building new stadiums.

Miami, it is time to build that new stadium.

Minnesota previously hosted Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 when it was held at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. If Minnesota is awarded another Super Bowl, it would mark the second time the game was held in that state.

“As an organization, we will work incredibly hard to secure the world’s marquee sporting event for Minnesota,” Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf said (via the team’s website). “City and state leaders were extremely collaborative on the new stadium effort, and this community deserves to host a Super Bowl and to receive the significant economic impact that comes with the game.”

The temperature might dip below zero in Minnesota, but at least NFL fans can warm up inside the Vikings’ new stadium.
