Michael Vick is still one of the most captivating players in football.
The off-field stuff aside, when Vick is right, he can be exhilarating. His Monday night extravaganza at Washington in 2010 is one of the great all-time performances. Later that season, DeSean Jackson never would have had a chance to return a punt on the final play against the Giants without Vick's 107 rushing yards and 209 passing yards in the second half alone. Vick was probably the second choice for MVP that season. And that wasn't too long ago.
One of the interesting subplots of this season is the possibility of seeing the dynamic Vick running Chip Kelly's uptempo offense in Philadelphia. Vick will have the first crack at the job, as ESPN reported Vick is expected to start the preseason opener on Friday against New England.
That's not too surprising, because recent reports have stated that Vick has started to widen the gap between himself and Nick Foles for the starting job. Perhaps he fits the Kelly offense as well as everyone first projected when the Oregon coach was hired.
Even though Vick is expected to start, Kelly didn't announce a starter and said don't read too much into whoever starts the game.
"They're both going to get reps," Kelly said, according to the team's transcript. "So whoever takes the first rep let's not anoint them as anything. Someone's got to be the first guy."
It doesn't mean that much, but it does mean a little something. Kelly is correct, he had to pick someone to be first. And it was Vick. Unless Kelly flipped a coin, Vick getting the first start is an indicator he leads the race.
The Eagles were already going to be one of the most interesting teams of the preseason. Seeing how well Vick plays in Kelly's offense is just another reason to check them out.
