Sometimes, coaches let starting battles drag on a little too long, and it gets to be a little insulting to everyone involved that no announcement has been made, because it's clear what the answer will be.
The coaches in Philadelphia and Cleveland have ended the madness and picked their starting quarterbacks, and neither choice is a surprise.
Michael Vick has been tremendous this preseason for the Eagles, and Brandon Weeden has had a strong two preseason games for the Browns. Going into the third preseason game, where the starters will probably play into the season half, Vick and Weeden were given the nod to start the regular-season opener for their teams.
Philadelphia had a legitimate quarterback battle going into camp. Second-year player Nick Foles seemed to even have a slight edge at the end of minicamps. But Vick started camp well and was just about perfect in two preseason games, completing 13-of-15 passes (one of the incompletions was a Hail Mary at the end of the half against Carolina). He looks like a natural fit in new coach Chip Kelly's offense, and still is one of the most talented players in the NFL. There was really no question after the second game that Vick was the best option to start the season.
That's it: Michael Vick is the starter for the season.

Cleveland never seemed to have a real quarterback competition, but coach Rob Chudzinksi went through the charade anyway, regularly mentioning a competition between Weeden and Jason Campbell although there was never any indication Campbell had a legitimate shot. If it was done to motivate Weeden, it might have worked. Weeden has looked tremendous in both preseason games, and so have the Browns. Weeden has completed 18-of-25 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns in six offensive series, and to the surprise of nobody, he was announced as the opening-day starter.
Vick and Weeden both earned the jobs by playing well in the first two preseason games. Now they just have to carry that over to the regular season.
