Lions defensive lineman’s father dies after charity hoops game

Andre Fluellen (Getty)Detroit Lions defensive lineman Andre Fluellen is mourning the loss of his father, Rev. Charles Fluellen, after he complained of chest pains and lost consciousness at the "Pastors vs. Politicians" game in Cartersville, Ga. He was pronounced dead later that day.

Fluellen remembered his father, who was just 57, on Twitter. "Please pray for my family... Lost a great man, but even greater father today. Thank God that through Jesus, we don't die, we just go home."

He also asked his followers to be good to their loved ones.

"Pls tell someone you love them... Somebody needs to hear it."

The younger Fluellen has been a versatile part of the Lions' pass rush for the past four seasons. Playing at both defensive tackle and end, he played in 13 games during the 2011 season.

Friends said that Charles often talked about his sons. He was a pastor as well as a director in the Bartow County Transit Department. A member of his church remembered Fluellen's happiness with his life.

"Recently, the question was asked to him probably in the last two weeks or week or so if he could be doing anything in life what would he be doing. And he said, exactly what he's doing."

Though the offseason is still young, it has been a tragic one for NFL players. Last week, Tommie Harris, a defensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers, lost his young wife.

Andre, I join so many others in expressing sympathy at your tremendous loss. Be comforted by the memories of wonderful times you and your father and your family shared and all the love and care he gave especially to you. I feel sure you made him proud. Think often of his words of faith and remember that he will always be with you. God Bless You.

You only get one dad. It's a tough loss at any age. Cry your eyes out today, but tommorow, and from then on, remember your dad with a smile on your lips and a twinkle in your eyes.

Easier said than done. My 95 year old father passed away last year. He was a real sweetheart..so funny and loving. Don't know if I'll ever be able to smile at the mention of his name. I try but I end up crying.

Alexa, women handle it differently. You can do both at the same time. You probably have.

Don't wait until I'm gone to tell me how you feel
Tell me today while the time is real
I don't want to die for you to say all you have to say
why wait till I'm gone, just tell me today
I'm telling you now I love you very much
I want to show you every second of every day and such
Instead of missing me when I'm gone forever
Be apart of my life today you and I together
This is my prayer going abroad to all I know and love
I want to show you how I feel right now, not when You're gone.

57 years old. Pretty young to die. I'm not a Lions' fan but I can make an exception for Andre. Prayers for you.
