The Kansas City Chiefs' offseason just keeps getting better.
Receiver Dwayne Bowe will be suspended for the season opener, as first reported by Yahoo's Rand Getlin. It's a result of his marijuana possession arrest last year. Bowe was arrested for speeding last Nov. 10 and had more than 10 grams of marijuana on him.
This will probably lead to another round of discussion about whether the NFL needs to reevaluate its marijuana policies, but football-wise it's another tough blow for Kansas City, which has lost a ton this offseason and added very little.
The Chiefs have a winnable game at home to start the season, against Tennessee. But that game becomes tougher without Bowe, who is by far Kansas City's top wideout. He has that No. 1 tag even though he has rarely really lived up to it, with just 57 catches for 673 yards last season. Still, it's yet another challenge for the Chiefs as they try to get back to the playoffs.
Here's Bowe's statement through the NFLPA, via NFL Network's Albert Breer:
“I am extremely sorry that I can’t be on the field for the first game of the 2014 season because I made an error in judgment. I take responsibility for my mistake, and it will not happen again. I hope that my teammates, coaches, and Chiefs fans accept my sincere apology. I will be supporting my teammates in week one, and I cannot wait to get back on the field to help us win in week two and beyond as we work towards our goal of winning the Super Bowl.”
