You may remember that Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh got into it a couple years ago when Carroll was at USC and Harbaugh was at Stanford. Harbaugh ran up the score a little bit on Carroll's Trojans, and Carroll famously wanted to know of Harbaugh, "What's your deal?" after the game. By all accounts (or at least from what Carroll has told me and other Seattle reporters), the two have made amends.
However, you may not want to invite Harbaugh and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz to the same party anytime soon. After the 49ers knocked off the Lions this afternoon, taking Schwartz's team from the ranks of the undefeated, Harbaugh wanted to crow a little bit about the 25-19 score. Understandable, but what you don't want to do is run across the field, pulling your shirt up, and getting in the opposing coach's face with a victory yell. That's basically what Harbaugh did, and … well, let's just say that Schwartz didn't like it.
Schwartz first gave Harbaugh a look that indicated he wasn't sure what Harbaugh was doing. Then, some words must have been exchanged, because Schwartz clearly started going after Harbaugh at high speed while Harbaugh retreated. Eventually, a group of Lions and 49ers got in the middle of it in a corner of the end zone where the Lions go to their locker rooms, and the near-fight dissipated.
You may also remember that John Harbaugh, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and Todd Haley, head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, got into it earlier this season over Haley's contention that Harbaugh was running up the score in a preseason game. Harbaugh contended that he was just looking at his full 90-man roster, and another score just happened.
Maybe it runs in the family? In any case, we should be hearing fallout from this for a while.
