Jets continue to clear out some veterans, cut receiver Santonio Holmes

The New York Jets cut Santonio Holmes. Remember him?

It has been a while since he was relevant on the field. There always seemed to be some story about his injury rehab or something else, but no production. Over the past two seasons he had 43 catches, 728 yards and two touchdowns. It wasn't a big surprise when Holmes got cut on Monday.

Holmes never did much for the Jets after coming over from the Steelers. He never had more than 746 yards in a season. A Lisfranc injury in 2012 ended his season after just four games, and signaled the beginning of the end for him in New York. It wasn't that long ago that Holmes was the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII, and a rising star with Pittsburgh. Some off-field issues caused the Steelers to trade him to the Jets for a fifth-round pick. It looks like the Steelers got out at the right time.

That's the second prominent veteran the Jets have let loose in the past two days. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie was cut over the weekend. The Jets, coming off a surprising 8-8 season, have cleaned house a bit. The Jets saved a little more than $8 million under the salary cap by releasing Holmes, money they can now use to get a more productive receiver for Geno Smith to target.
