Jets congratulate Giants with full-page ad

Readers of the N.Y. Daily News cracked open their Wednesday morning editions and saw this image:

    New York Daily News

A classy statement of congratulations from one proud organization to another? Or a desperate attempt by one organization to latch on to another's success, in an effort to remind people that they still exist?

I'm giving the Jets the benefit of the doubt. They crashed and burned so badly in the 2011 season that there's no reason to kick them while they're down. I applaud them for their humility and willingness to extend a friendly gesture to their rival neighbors.

On the Giants end of things, Justin Tuck was not so gracious. At a victory celebration at MetLife stadium, Tuck, out of nowhere, took a small shot at the Jets. Again from the Daily News:

"Last time we did this it was in Giants Stadium," Tuck said, as he stood on a stage at midfield, behind the Super Bowl trophy. "Now we're in MetLife Stadium.

"But one thing you can be sure of is whose house this is."

I'm pretty sure they're still sharing it with the Jets, which makes it a meaningless declaration. But it is kind of fun to yell "THIS IS OUR HOUSE!", so I get it. It would mean more if there was some kind of stipulation between the Giants and Jets that whoever has the best season gets full ownership of MetLife Stadium for the next year. Loser has to play their home games at Rutgers.

Neither team is man enough to agree to that, though. The Giants still have to share the stadium. The title of "Best team in New York," though? They share that with no one.

Gracias, Darren Rovell and Larry Brown Sports.

Just more proof that we can not say that a 9-7 team in the NFL can't be the champion. A team with a similar record in college football would be lucky to get a bowl game.

this is why i don't watch college ball.

Joke that a 9-7 team wins, but the played by the rules. Backed into a championship but whatever.

Congrats to the Giants, but since NY and the NFL are to cheap to build a stadium, they are the best team in NJ. No offense
      • david 3 months ago
Yeah, but Jersey is just a suburb of NY anyway...
      • Better than you 3 months ago
        Its also better than NY

There's no one in the state of NJ with enough juice to petition any major sports league to purchase a franchise so the state lures them w/taxpayer funded stadiums/arenas and poaches existing franchises. Add the Devils and Nets to the list. Yankees used NJ as leverage also.

its actually tactful, rex ryan had nothing to do with it.
      • Brian Keith Rogers 3 months ago
They had to get it out while Rex was at the buffet bar. So they had all the time they needed.

Tom Brady will never win another superbowl since he left his then pregnant girlfriend Moynahan to that ugly foul mouthed masculine Brazilian horse. BTW, Buffalo will never ever welcome Tom Brady again.

Why try to manufacture controversy? It was a classy gesture by the Jets. Period.

The JETS classy??? Is that even possible????

At the heart of it, it's just a New York thing. The Jets organization was just happy that those guys up in Baaahston didn't win. In all seriousness, though, Congratulations to the Giants on a huge season turnaround and a great ruin through the playoffs, ending with a well played Super Bowl game.

I think that the New York Jets showed class.

One "classy" gesture in a sea of false bravado and unfulfilled boasting will not make the Jests relevant. Only winning football games can do that.

Good way to show sportsmanship and I hope RR keeps his trap shut in the media next season. Focus on action rather than words. Btw, the last six games the Giants played this season was a joy for any fan to watch.

I really wasn't that interested in watching the game as not a big fan of either: however, that was quite a contest, both teams really played their hearts out. Both are to be congratulated for a great four quarters and one team had to win and one lose - that is just the way it is!

Very classy. If you try to make something else out of this or belittle this, you just don't get it...and by "it" I mean everything that is good about sports.

I'll just say the obvious. That ad shows a lot of class. I've been a fan of the baseball Giants for 55 years. But have you ever seen the losing baseball team congratulate the world series winners after the game? I've watched for it and it doesn't happen. Maybe this can be an example for baseball.

Regarding Justin Tuck's 'dig': Remember, the last display of "class" by the Jets was covering up all displays- including in the locker room hallways- with any reference to the Giants' championships before their 'home' game in December. Regardless of new stadium and sponsorship naming thereof, the Jets will always be the bumpkin cousin mooching a stay in their rich, aristocratic cousins' home.
Regarding the ad itself: a part of me wonders if it was really bought by the Jets or if a playful Giants fan put it in as a poke at the Jets, While congratulating Giant leadership by name, not signed by Woody, Rex, or Mike Tannenbaum...

im a long time jet die hard. i think the jets should congrat and say thanks for doing what we wish we can do all season long. lets hope rex and coaching staff throw away there play books and just have the team watch the super bowl over and over so they can take notes and prepare for next season. and thats for real!!! GO JETS

a classy gesture indeed and i would like to think that had the roles been reversed the giants organization would have done the same.
