After injury, Ballard tests leg on sideline and collapses in pain (video)

Early in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI, New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard suffered a left knee injury on a play away the ball. He was brought off the field by trainers, but, this being the biggest game of his career, he wanted back in the game.

To test out the balky knee and show coaches he was able to play, Ballard engaged in a full sprint on the Giants sideline. It did not end well. Ballard took a few strides before running into a member of team personnel and collapsed to the ground in pain.

Ballard wouldn't return to the game, but did get some good news when it was revealed that the meniscus damage he suffered was not serious.

He was in the locker room when Ahmad Bradshaw scored his game-winning touchdown. He demanded that medical personnel cart him back out to the field so he could celebrate with his teammates. They obliged.

I don't like Giants at all but I now like Ballard and hope the New York fan show him the love and respect they should when the Giants have their parade. He is a tough guy!!

sir, most respectfully, it is craziness! These athletes are destroying their health. A meniscus injury that is not "serious"? this is baloney, my heart goes out to this fellow as he is done, finished.

GUEST, common folk like to pick on these guys for earning too much money. Then, When they sacrifice themselves like this, (Earning all that money) people like to say they're dumb for doing it. I can't stand either team in this Super Bowl, but this guy exemplifies what I look for in a football player I do root for. And, trust me, he will be fine with his meniscus tear. It's no big deal.

Yeah, his career is done from a funny hop he took. Guest, you're an idiot.

Football is tough to walk away from and he proved that. Glad the man got a SB ring after a great playoff run. Congats to the Giants from a diehard Packer fan. You run the table like the Packers last year. Take NOTHING for granted. "That's why they play the game". Well done

More like stupidity. He could've hurt himself worse by pulling a stunt like that. Smart move.

He showed that for some players it's the game and not just the money. He plays like an old time player who loves the game. Good job Giants! Eli, you are no longer Pattons little brother. Entire Giants team is a class act and Head coach shows that us oldtimers can still get job done. Next year it will be the Giants and the Colts(if they keep Patton). What a ball game that would be!

I'm a Bears fan through and through, but I wish Cutler had half the heart Ballard has. Congratulations to him and all the other Giants players that played their #$%$ off yesterday.

BlackWidow, not all the guys that played for OSU made the mistake that the others did. He should not be judged for their stupidity.

BlackWidow i'd be mad too if MY football team was the tarheels lmfao.it's cool you stay completely irrelevant to college football while MY BUCKEYES win a couple national titles over the next couple of years

Glad he'll be O K and the Pats have nothing to hang their heads about, they made it to the top 2 of all the teams. In the end, one team wins and the other loses. It's not the end of the world.

That was one of the high spots of the game for me. To be ready to do just about anything to contribute to the team in the Super Bowl. That is what the NFL is about when it is at its best. If you are going to play a game, play it to win. I hope he makes a full recovery and has a great career from here on out.
Still wish the Patriots had won, but the Giants were the better team yesterday.

that made me hurt when i saw him go down at least he has good news that its not as serious as first thought. At least he got to go celebrate with his team-mates.

Loads of Heart!!! The whole Giants Team displayed that ALL Season!!! They didn't have the highest payroll (EAGLES) nor even the most talented group of Players (GREEN BAY)- but the played as a TEAM with a ton of Heart- They have a lot to be very, very proud of. They did themselves, their organization and their City PROUD!!!!!

Although not well written, finally a Chris Chase article that isn't completely worthless
    • Ed CNJ  •  Newark, New Jersey  •  3 months ago
This guy made Giants fans forget the loss of Kevin Boss to the Raiders immediately....the fans love Ballard. He's tough at the line, has very good hands, can take a hammer of a hit and still tack on a few yards. What we saw him do yesterday, wants us to root for him even more next year !!! Congrats G-MEN !! PS to Coach Bill - - maybe cutting one of your WRs on Super Bowl eve proves Karma really is a #$%$..can you say dropped passes ??
    • Greg  •  Reno, Nevada  •  3 months ago
I'm not a fan, but more importantly - IM NOT A HATER - Chris Chase seems to be doing better than the haters, and although much is fluff, he tries and I am sure doesnt spend a lot of time hating. If you HATE you suck, thats it.

Not a Giants (or Pats) fan, but this man earned my respect. He has the heart of a champion.
    • TeedOff  •  3 months ago
This is the heart of a Giant.......for the heart of a Patriot see the shirtless Dancing with the Stars party after the game.
    • Rurik  •  Los Angeles, California  •  3 months ago
You don't have to be JIm Otto or Earl Campbell, to show your love of the game, the guy who plays in the NFL on any level has made sacrifices that the average civilian could never fathom!
    • NickV  •  3 months ago
This just shows why the G-Man are better than the Pats. Heart will win over computer generated game plans any day and twice on Sunday. Get it Pats? Twice on Sunday?
    • Moe  •  Louisville, Kentucky  •  3 months ago
i would say about 99 percent of players in this league could learn something here! this is what being a tough guy is about, not talking sh.t and not backing it up, but playing (or in this case trying) through pain. cheers to you
