Green Bay Packers will work out free agent quarterback Vince Young

Frank Schwab

As you watch preseason games, you will realize that Vince Young is better than many quarterbacks currently on NFL rosters. But he has been unable to get a job.

Young will get a shot to impress the Green Bay Packers on Monday, and maybe get another job at age 30. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported that the Packers will work out Young.

Young's NFL career certainly had its bad moments, such as the acrimonious split with the Tennessee Titans, but he has a lot of raw talent.

Young has a great combination of size, speed and arm strength, even if he never developed as a NFL passer. He has 46 touchdowns, 51 interceptions and a 57.9 completion percentage in his career.

But the thought of him getting a chance with the Packers (who could use a diversion given the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report that left tackle Bryan Bulaga might have a serious knee injury) is interesting. Being with an offensive-minded coach like Mike McCarthy could help Young. So could having Green Bay's deep receiving corps to throw to. The Packers have Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman backing up Aaron Rodgers, so it's not like they couldn't use an upgrade.

Perhaps this is just the common practice of NFL teams bringing in various players for workouts, so they have a timely report on available free agents should an emergency arise. A workout definitely doesn't mean the Packers are interested in signing Young right now, even if he looks good. But hopefully the Packers take the plunge with Young, because it would make the preseason a lot more interesting.
