Geno Smith struggles mightily, benched as Jets blown out at Buffalo

Per the old saying, a team only can go as far as its quarterback takes them.

So when you consider this ...

... it's no surprise that as Geno Smith goes, so go the New York Jets.

The Jets are 5-5 after their 37-14 thrashing at the hands of the Buffalo Bills, and Smith has become a problem. He has 20 turnovers on the season now, and Sunday he threw his fourth pick-6 of the year. The Bills' pass rush buzzed around him all day, and Smith had no answers.

When the game was out of hand, the Jets sat Smith down and put in Matt Simms, who led a TD drive. But heed: There is no controversy, per se. It's not as if this team views Simms as a potential starter down the line. But the question is, what do they think of Smith now?

Even with a suspect supporting cast, Smith's mistakes often have been self-inflicted. Even with some nice moments in tough situations, Smith too often undoes himself with turnovers early in games to put his defense in a tough spot. He has a mere one touchdown pass and eight interceptions in his past five games, and even with a few big wins on his resume, that's unacceptable.

The coaches didn't seem to trust him against the Bills — the Bills! — which is pretty telling, especially with Santonio Holmes and Kellen Winslow back on the field for the Jets.

Can he weather the storm? The Jets should not bench him now, but they have to consider bringing in some serious competition in the offseason before handing him anything permanent.
