On Tuesday, the Patriots announced they had signed offensive lineman Brennan Williams to their practice squad. It was a homecoming for Williams, whose father, Brent, spent the first eight years of his 11-year NFL career playing on the Patriots' defenisve line. Brennan went to high school in Massachusetts.
But after two days and one practice, Brennan Williams was released by New England on Thursday.
Williams hasn't played a meaningful game in quite some time – after his career at North Carolina, he was a third-round pick of the Texans in 2013 but spent his rookie season on injured reserve. He was out of football in 2014, resurfacing this year when Jacksonville signed him in training camp. He was released Aug. 29.
But Williams has a Plan B – wrestling. NESN writer Doug Kyed tweeted the 6-foot-6 Williams is headed to Booker T's wrestling school in Houston. Williams has long wanted to pursue wrestling, but thought that would happen after a long NFL career.
He joins a substantial list of former football players who went on to success in the WWF/WWE.
Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, won a national championship at Miam (Fla.) and played in the CFL before turning to wrestling; "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan was briefly with the Falcons before becoming a beloved fighter, and more recently, former Maryland D-lineman Dean Muhtadi, who had brief stints with the Packers and Cardinals, has been wrestling under the name Mojo Rawley.
Muhtadi played at Maryland with Dan Gronkowski, so of course he's hung out with Rob Gronkowski:
