Most Pro Bowl players are already making a lot of money, and the $25,000 difference between winning or losing isn't going to stick with them for years.
But when you're the long snapper at the Pro Bowl, you want that money. And former 49ers long snapper Brian Jennings is still sore at Carolina quarterback Cam Newton for screwing around at the Pro Bowl when he was there.
"Not a lot of people know this, but Cam Newton owes me $25,000," Jennings said on KNBR radio's "Murph and Mac Show."
Now, the mood was lighthearted during the show and Jennings seemed to be kidding about Newton and the money. But, well, maybe he wasn't totally joking.
Newton was at the Pro Bowl at the end of his rookie season in 2011, and his trip was famously bad. He came off poorly to many of his teammates. And Jennings said he wasn't taking the game seriously at all. And, when you draw attention for not taking a Pro Bowl seriously, among all the other players who aren't taking it seriously, you've accomplished something.
“We have Drew Brees at quarterback with his playbook all week, studying … We have Cam Newton with his head phones on all week goofing off," Jennings said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "We go into the game, and this guy is chucking the ball all over the place, and everybody is looking around going, ‘What’s this guy doing? Are you kidding?’ The punter and I look at each other and say, ‘We are going to have a long second half.’ We punted five times in the Pro Bowl, you know?”
“He went in there and stank it up. He never looked at his playbook and he’s chucking the ball all over the place. He can’t hit the open guy.”
Newton was 9-of-27 in that Pro Bowl game and threw three interceptions. The NFC lost 59-41.
Newton has gone on to take most of his subsequent games very seriously, and he leads the Panthers into a playoff game on Sunday against Jennings' old 49ers teammates. But Jennings doesn't sound like he's going to forget missing out on that extra $25,000 the NFC lost in that Pro Bowl.
