Football loses a fan with George Carlin's passing

A few weeks ago, Fifth Down, the NFL blog at the New York Times, posted this famous George Carlin clip as part of a larger discussion about football and war metaphors. With Carlin's death last night, the clip has become unfortunately timely.

I've always found it slightly comforting when I hear a someone like George Carlin talk admirably about football. From time to time, I'll wonder if being a rabid NFL fan isn't a completely ridiculous way to spend so much time, and then I hear that George Carlin enjoyed the game, and I'll feel better that one of America's sharpest social critics allowed himself to get sucked into the game, too.
