• They're calling the surgery "minor," but when you're a 30-year-old running back, and a doctor's sticking a knife in you, there's nothing minor about it. Brian Westbrook's having some bone spurs cleaned out of his right ankle, and could be out until deep into training camp.

• The good news, though, is that according to Pro Football Weekly, LeSean "Shady" McCoy, is picking up the offense well and could probably handle a big role early.

• Also on the Eagles tip, The 700 Level introduces the McNabb-O-Meter 2010, a handy way to keep tabs on the likelihood that McNabb will stay with the Eagles after this season, or is on his way out of town.

• Despite whatever problems he had with the knee yesterday, Ben Roethlisberger(notes) was back at practice today at 100%. Next week, we'll have a special investigative report about a Ben Roethlisberger hangnail.

• In other Roethlisberger news, he'll be playing Bethpage Black, the site of the upcoming U.S. Open, for an NBC special. Roethlisberger's a three-handicap, but the challenge is to break 100 at the vicious course. Tiger told him he's capable of shooting 87.

• Tony Dungy's already showing more of a willingness to speak out and criticize than I thought he had. He's openly questioning Jay Cutler's maturity, and saying that the Bears are taking a big risk by bringing him in.

• More than 60 Baltimore Ravens are getting together to build a playground for children at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore. Yay Ravens!

Vince Wilfork on Vince Wilfork's contract situation: "My main thing is that Vince Wilfork(notes) is looking out for Vince Wilfork, point-blank. Whatever it may be. If it calls for me to miss something I’m going to miss it because I look toward the future. That’s how I’m going to roll. Something may change in a couple of days, something might not change. I’ll take it day by day. I’m looking out for my family and myself. That’s the bottom line."

• Here's a look at the best punt returners in NFL history.

Marcedes Lewis's(notes) secret to having a successful season? Post-It Notes. He likes to make little notes for himself and post them on a bulletin board.

• Lions running back Kevin Smith(notes) stands by his statement that the Lions will be making the playoffs. That's a much bolder statement than the one represented in the article's headline; that the Lions "are on the rise." Of course they're on the rise, what are they going to do, get worse than 0-16? You can't go -2 and 18.

Matt Leinart(notes) spent some time learning from Tom Brady this off-season. On football, I presume. Because if those two got together and set their minds on the ladies, there wouldn't be any left for the rest of us.
