Colts quarterbacks Matt Hasselbeck, Chandler Harnish wager on half-court shot for No. 8 jersey

Shutdown Corner

The Indianapolis Colts added veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to their roster this offseason, signing the 14-year veteran to a two-year, $7.25 million contract to be the backup to Andrew Luck.

Hasselbeck has worn the No. 8 for much of his career, including his long stint with the Seattle Seahawks and with the Tennessee Titans the previous two seasons. That number was not available in Indianapolis as it is currently being worn by second-year quarterback Chandler Harnish.

Hasselbeck easily could have pulled rank on Harnish, using his veteran status to get the jersey number he's been associated with since 2001. Hasselbeck considered wearing No. 11, which he wore with the Green Bay Packers at the start of his career, but decided to take a run at No. 8 by offering Harnish, who apparently is quite boastful of his basketball skills, $8,000 for the No. 8 if the Indiana native could sink a half-court shot.

As shown in the video posted by Andy Stayer of Colts.com, Harnish nailed it.

Harnish was "Mr. Irrelevant" in the 2012 NFL draft and received a signing bonus of $45,896 from the Colts in his rookie contract. Harnish split his rookie season between the Colts' 53-man roster and practice squad before he was re-signed to the team on Jan. 7, receiving a $10,000 signing bonus to do so. For a player not guaranteed to earn another dime in the NFL, an additional $8,000 would be a pretty good pay day, but Harnish, who will wear the No. 5, is donating the money to the "Dollars For Scholars" charity at Norwell High School is Ossian, Indiana.

"However that $8k will be going to Norwell HS Dollars for Scholars in honor of Heath Bumgarner who tragically passed on March 3rd of this yr," Harnish posted on his Twitter account.
