Brian Billick recommends that Tim Tebow shed some of that muscle

Getty ImagesYou may have noticed that Tim Tebow is a muscular chap. I believe he's the most muscular quarterback I've ever seen, unless that was muscle mass on Jared Lorenzen, and I don't believe it was.

One ex-coach out there thinks that all the muscle is detrimental to Tebow's play. The NFL Network's Brian Billick would like to see Tim Tebow get a little more lithe. Via The Huddle:

"I think the No. 1 thing Tim Tebow has to do, I don't think he can lift the way he's lifted before. There's three people that can't lift the way Tim Tebow does: pro quarterbacks, pro tennis players and golfers."

Tebow packs 236 chiseled pounds onto his 6-3 frame.

"He has got to cut back on that rigid, thick (frame)," said Billick. "I know it keeps him alive as a running quarterback, but it does not bode well for his passing, the fluidity that he has to have. So that's, to me, job one in the offseason, he's got to change his (conditioning) mindset."

It's an interesting point, but I don't know if Billick is right. Wouldn't Tebow without the muscle be kind of like Darius Heyward-Bey without all the speed?

Obviously, a lot of things can and should change about how Tim Tebow throws the football, and maybe the muscle mass isn't helping him. But surely, there are about 30 other things he can work on before he starts to worry about that: where he holds the ball, where he starts the throwing motion, making everything more compact, getting his feet right. When he gets those things down, and he still can't throw the ball, then maybe we put him on the "Christian Bale before 'The Fighter'" weight-loss plan.

I mean, he's big, but he's not this dude. His arms have room to move.

And if you take the muscle off of Tebow, doesn't he break fewer tackles, get sacked more easily and lose a lot of his ability to keep a play alive? And if Tim Tebow can't do those things, is he still Tim Tebow?

I think what you'd be left with is a guy who looks more like a prototypical quarterback, but would still have major issues with throwing accuracy, and he wouldn't be a spectacular runner, either. Congratulations. You've created Mark Sanchez.

He was coaching Kyle 'the disaster" Boller. He is far from being a subject matter expert.

He was also the offensive coordinator that helped make an old and washed up Randall Cunningham play like Joe Montana.

I think MJD nailed it (or rather he nailed Billick). Tebow's physique has a lot less to do with his passing proficiency than does his motion, release point, arm angle, etc, and it allows him to play the game the way he does. Unless he addresses the motion, release point, arm angle, etc, Tebow'd BETTER stay muscled up, because unless he is, he's going to get killed out there running around. Regardless of his mechanics, I doubt Tebow is going to stop running.
By the way, who are the great quarterbacks that Billick has developed?

mjd is more qualified then brian billick????
      • ronald 4 months ago
Billick's point is well taken. Tebow has the bulk and biceps of a tight end or fullback. That doesn't help with quick, agile movements for a quick release and stepping into deep throws. He will "short arm" his throws with that tight oversized musculature.
      • Tony C 4 months ago
I agree with Billick. A QB throwing the ball is like a boxer. A muscular built boxer has no snap on his punches. Same with a QB.

Tebow Short armed his throws last year as well before he even bulked up...Dont you guys remember when he played he got creamed alot, scrambled to make a few decent runs, and still couldint throw the ball with ANY accuracy....When will people wake up and look at this guys skills and stats before spouting off crap like he is short arming his throws because of his muscles. With or without muscles the guy has no accuracy...

the only reason why he bulked up was so that he could take harder hits...

Coaches coach ... And when they can't coach, they go spout off in the media as though they CAN coach.

Billick was an arrogant jerk when he coached, looked down on everyone and though he was a genious.

and yet how many of you have a Superbowl ring????

have you ever met Billick? Probably not, so how can you say if he is a jerk? I can understand how he got frustrated with media and came off the wrong way, but that doesn't make him a jerk. seems like a good guy to me and players always spoke highly of him.

No need to lose muscle. If it is determined that his build is limiting his range of motion then stretching, flexibility, and range of motion activities should be added to his routine. If muscles limited range of motion wouldnt you think that male gymnasts would have a hard time making some of the moves they do? Everyone has these ideas about making Tebow better but the last time I checked he is a Heisman winner, a two time National Champ, career passing leader at a school that has had some pretty good QB's, and along with many other things to numerous to mention he led the Broncos to their first playoff game in what, 10 years? Give him a full camp, improved players around him, and continued work in an offense he is familiar with and he will continue to excel.

maybe he should look like richard simmons

It's a different kind of muscle. Look at male gymnasts and then at Tebow. He is bulky and they are not.
      • STEVE 4 months ago
I may be wrong here, but I don't think that male gymnasts are required to throw a football, are they? Could this be the ole apples to oranges comparison here? Gymnastic movements are strength movements. A throwing motion requires flexibility. I am a baseball coach, and for throwing, we are much more concerned with the flexibility of the arm and shoulder, not the static strength.

when your team is down 3 touchdowns and your still running the ball every play, that tells you what?
    • JohnR  •  New York, New York  •  4 months ago
Give Tebow a tight end and a few receivers that know how to catch and run with the ball; a RB to take heat off of McG; give him a line that can pass-block; and a head coach/OC that calls plays with the intent to win games, and Tebow should pass for 200+ yards every game. It is obvious that the team sucked and he single-handedly made them better -- even over-achievers. Surround him with talent, and he will live up to the expectations. It's only fair.

That's completely unfounded,Baseball players know that"s not true. That's why they sneak around and take steroids. Defensive backs look like they have ham hocks hanging out of their uni,Linemen are getting bigger and faster, all due to lifting heavy weights. Tebow has maximized his ability with weights.

Any ideas, as to why Billick doesn't seem to be on anyone's list of hot coaches?
He's the same guy who thought Trent Dilfer wasn't worth "re-signing", after he gave him a Super Bowl win. Then replaced Dilfer with, WHO? Elvis Grbac?
Great move, coach. You won what, with everyone but Dilfer?
      NOTHING!!

Tebow without the muscle will be ROMOed(runned over more often)

Why not wait till next season to find out how Tebow performs as a QB. Elway has till then to teach Tebow how, Elway, became such a great QB.
However, 2 TEs that are 6'6" weight 250 and run a 4.4 and 3 WRs that are 6'2" and run a 4.2 and a RB as Trent Richardson from Bama would enhance his opportunties to show improvement as a QB. Also, an offensive line that blocks like the Patriots did in the game against the Broncos would help.
Lastly, trade Tebow to the Jags in Jacksonville, Florida my home town. There are 5 million Florida citizens who will pay to watch Tebow on Sunday.
The Alabama/LSU game is what we call Southern football. When Tebow was the Florida QB he beat both of these teams.

I can't believe he said that. That myth about being too "muscle-bound" to be athletic died ages ago. In the dim past they used to warn baseball players not to lift weights because they would become too "muscle-bound" to swing a bat. That theory appears to have been disproved. Besides, Tebow is hardly the first QB with big muscles.

It has been suggested that I could operate my computer better if I was not so muscular but would I really be the same competent dedicated valued employee if I looked like everybody else?

Guess Yahoosports still cant find anything worth while to write about. They have about wore all of us out writing about Tebow. The only thing left is to write about when Tim goes poop. Give it a break and write something interesting and leave the kid alone so he can learn how to play QB.
    • skydiver-1  •  4 months ago
Tebow is just a muscular guy. The young man is strong and doesn't need to lose muscle. Losing muscle has nothing to do with quickness. How fast you are depends on reflexes. Some guys are just naturally strong and Tebow is one of them. Furthermore, if Tebow loses bulk, he'll also lose strenght. The young man's in incredible physical condition. He's also pretty darn quick.

here's a suggestion...instead of trying to change him...work on his strengths {no pun intended} with the proper game plan he can win. Tim Tebow has been a winner at every level, no reason why he can not continue on that path. how many other qb's have done what he has done in the same amount of time? not many!

When I see Tebow, I think of maybe "toned", not "muscular". He does look to have the legs of a running back though.
