Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert has left Sunday's game against the Houston Texans with an injury to his right elbow.
On a second-and-10 play with 9:54 to play in the first quarter, Gabbert's right arm was hit by a blitzing Danieal Manning while he was beginning his throwing motion. Due to the contact, the ball fell incomplete just beyond the line of scrimmage. However, after the officials gathered, they determined that Gabbert had actually fumbled, and the Texans were awarded possession as the ball was recovered by inside linebacker Tim Dobbins.
Gabbert's return was listed as "probable" by the Jaguars, was replaced on the next series of downs, a three-and-out, by veteran backup Chad Henne. On the opening play of Jacksonville's next possession, Henne remained in the game, hooking up with first round wide receiver Justin Blackmon for 63 yards, putting the Jaguars' inside the red zone. Henne and Blackmon appeared to connect on a touchdown two plays later, but the rookie did not complete the catch, allowing Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson to rip the ball out of his grasp as they fell to the Reliant Stadium turf.
Henne would hit tight end Marcedes Lewis for an 18-yard, game-tying touchdown on the following play. Shortly after that play, the Jaguars downgraded Gabbert's return to "questionable", which may be downgraded to "doubtful" after Cecil Shorts took a five-yard pass from Henne and ran for a 67-yard, go-ahead touchdown.
Gabbert struggled as a rookie and his sophomore season has not been much better. Through nine games this season, Gabbert has completed 58 percent of his 278 pass attempts for 1,662 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions, but has been sacked 22 times and has lost three fumbles. Gabbert has also struggled to stay on the field, injuring his left (non-throwing) shoulder in a 26-23 loss to the Oakland Raiders and re-injuring that shoulder in a 27-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 8.
