Bears coach Marc Trestman says quarterback Jay Cutler will start on Sunday

Shutdown Corner

Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman ended any possible quarterback controversy between Jay Cutler and Josh McCown on Thursday.

Cutler will start against Cleveland on Sunday.

Trestman made that announcement during his press conference on Thursday. Cutler has missed the last four games after suffering a high ankle sprain Nov. 10 in a loss to the Lions. McCown stepped in and played well during Cutler’s absence, but Trestman is going with his starter and not riding the hot hand of his backup.

Trestman on length of Cutler's leash: "I wouldn't be prepared with any of those hypotheticals. I expect Jay to play well, play efficiently."

Cutler has started in eight games this season, completing 63 percent of his passes for 1,908 yards with 13 touchdowns, eight interceptions and has a 88.4 passer rating. Chicago is in the midst of a playoff race, and Trestman clearly believes Cutler gives his team the best chance to win.

McCown shined in Cutler's absence. During seven games this season (five starts), McCown has connected on 66.8 percent of his passes for 1,809 yards with 13 TDs, one interception and has a 109.8 passer rating.
