Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs is the latest team leader to suffer a serious injury. In addition to the Bears announcing the loss of quarterback Jay Cutler for four weeks, Pro Football Talk is reporting that Briggs will be out for 4-6 weeks with a shoulder injury that he suffered in the loss to the Washington Redskins.

Surgery will not be needed. Briggs, 32, is the team's tackles leader and defensive heartbeat.

Briggs is expected to return at some point before the end of the season, but will the Bears be in contention then? They could consider shutting him down for the season at that point, depending on how competitive the Bears are later in the season.

The Bears are on bye this week, which gives them more time to ponder their options with Cutler and Briggs out for extended periods.
