He had that ring stolen from his hotel room during a trip to Hong Kong in 1977.
In 2011, Art Donovan got it back.
Police in Howard County, Md., recovered the ring from a Craigslist user who was trying to sell it for $20,000. The police received a tip from one of Donovan's old friends, who noticed the ring for sale on the website.
The seller was not charged with any crime. It was determined that the ring was purchased legally years earlier by a member of his wife's family.
Soon after, police returned the ring to the 86-year-old Hall of Famer. He couldn't be reached for comment. His wife said they had never discussed the theft publicly before.
"It's unbelievable," Donovan's eldest daughter, Debbie Donovan said of the recovered ring to The Baltimore Sun. "It's just beautiful. There's not a ding, not a scratch on it."
She told the newspaper that the ring was taken from her parents' hotel room during a trip to the Far East. It had been on her mother's charm bracelet along with Art's Boston College class ring and her mother's college ring.
