Andy Reid believes Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will receive a new contract

Shutdown Corner

Kansas City coach Andy Reid is confident his organization will figure out a way to lock up quarterback Alex Smith.

Honestly, it is not like the Chiefs really have a choice.

San Francisco traded Smith to Kansas City for a second-round pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in 2014 that became a second-rounder once the Chiefs won eight games last season. The 49ers were ultimately able to obtain five players from that trade. It ended up being a great transaction for San Francisco, a team that was not going to play Smith over Colin Kaepernick.

Smith is slated to earn $7.5 million this season, and will become a free agent in 2015. The Chiefs are currently negotiating a contract extension with Smith. Reid was a guest on NFL Network’s “NFL AM” show on Tuesday and believes Smith will be re-signed.

"Well, there's open communication between both parties. Now, I'm not in that business anymore -- that's (general manager) John Dorsey's side of it -- but there's been open communication,"Reid said. “I've always believed that if there's open communication, then normally good things happen. So, I'm sure something will get done. I can't put a time frame on that, but I'm sure something will get done."

Smith led Kansas City to an 11-5 record and the playoffs last season. Indianapolis defeated Kansas City in the postseason, but Smith had 378 passing yards and four touchdowns despite running back Jamaal Charles sustaining a concussion on the game’s opening drive.

Kansas City selected quarterback Aaron Murray in the recent NFL draft, but he is still recovering from an ACL injury sustained last year. Murray participated in Kansas City’s recent rookie minicamp without any difficulty. However, he is not expected to compete against Smith to start during training camp.

Smith recently turned 30, and still has plenty of good years ahead.

It appears those years will be spent in Kansas City.
