  • With Tony Romo hurt, it's now Dak Prescott's show with Cowboys

And your first rookie starting quarterback for the 2016 season is not named Goff or Wentz.

Those guys were drafted Nos. 1 and 2 this spring. But No. 135 overall — 76 picks after a kicker was taken, 75 before a long snapper went — will be the first to see the field. (Of course, Paxton Lynch could beat Prescott by a few days if he wins the Denver Broncos’ starting job, but that’s not expected right now.)

Rayne Dakota “Dak” Prescott had a decorated college career, carrying Mississippi State on his back most of the past two seasons to almost unseen heights, and now the fourth-rounder will be thrust into the Dallas Cowboys’ starting lineup right away as a rookie with Tony Romo’s back unable to bear that weight.

Dak Prescott will open season as starter. There is no debate there. Jerry and Stephen Jones say they will look for veteran backup.

  • Criticism of Colin Kaepernick's national anthem protest begins

Frank Schwab at Shutdown Corner23 hrs ago

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knew that not standing for the national anthem would draw some criticism.

A couple former NFL quarterbacks weighed in. T.J. Yates, formerly of the Houston Texans and currently a free agent, retweeted a criticism of Kaepernick not standing for the anthem in Friday night’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, and followed it up with this tweet of his own:

It blows my mind how many people hate the country they live in.

    — T.J. Yates (@TJ_Yates) August 27, 2016

Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster, a former teammate of Yates with the Texans, argued with Yates on Twitter after saying it was Kaepernick’s right to protest. Here’s part of the conversation:

the flag represents freedom. the freedom to choose to stand or not. that's what makes this country beautiful. …

  • Colin Kaepernick explains why he won't stand during national anthem

Eric Edholm at Shutdown Corner1 day ago

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been a lightning rod for attention in his career, and his latest statements surely could make him an even more polarizing figure.

Kaepernick explained his unwillingness to stand for the playing of the national anthem, which of course happens before the kickoff of every NFL game. It happened in last night’s preseason game at Levi’s Stadium against the Green Bay Packers, one in which he struggled in his first action since last season.

  • Browns punter gives hilariously bad effort on non-tackle attempt

Eric Edholm at Shutdown Corner1 day ago

You can call the third preseason game the dress rehearsal for NFL teams if you wish. But Andy Lee might just laugh at you. And we’re going to laugh at him.

It’s clear tat the Cleveland Browns punter is directionally kicking to the regular-season opener, if you know what we mean. Check out the effort — rather, the lack of — as Tampa Bay Buccaneers punt returner Adam Humphries flies by Lee to give the Bucs a 17-3 lead in the first quarter Friday night.

There's nobody there!@adamhumphries13 takes the punt back 73 yards TO THE HOUSE! #CLEvsTB
