Just days after Brandon Jacobs complained about "rotting away" with the San Francisco 49ers, the team has suspended the veteran running back for the remainder of the regular season.

Signed to a one-year, $1.6 million contract in early April, Jacobs has been active for just three of the 49ers' 13 games this season, logging a mere 10 plays. On those plays, Jacobs has five rushing attempts for 7 yards. By not being a part of the team's 46-man gameday roster, Jacobs lost $125,000 in "per game active" roster bonuses through Sunday and will lose $37,500 more while serving his three-game suspension.

Jacobs lashed out on social media late last week.

"I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners." Jacobs wrote on Instagram, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. "This is by far the worst year I ever had, I'll tell you like I told plenty others."

The 49ers demonstrated that, under head coach Jim Harbaugh, they are willing to pull the plug on a free agent by releasing an ineffective Braylon Edwards late in the 2011 season; the Jacobs' situation was different as there exists a real possibility that he could be picked up by a team who the 49ers could meet in the postseason. Specifically, Jacobs could return to the New York Giants, a team he didn't want to leave in the first place.

According to Mike Garafolo of USA Today Sports, who provided blanket coverage of the Giants for many seasons, the only team that Jacobs is currently willing to play for is the Giants. By placing Jacobs on their suspended list for the rest of the season, the 49ers have blocked such a move until the 2013 offseason. Jacobs, however, is planning to file an appeal to either be reinstated, receive his remaining pay or his release.
