Washington star tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins arrested for DUI
Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, one of the best tight ends in the country and a potential 2014 first-round draft pick, was arrested for DUI in Seattle on Saturday after a police officer came upon his crashed vehicle in an open catch basin.
According to the police report obtained by the Seattle Times, it was a single-car accident and Seferian-Jenkins had a bloody nose from his face smashing into the windshield.
The report stated the driver had the “strong odor of an an alcoholic beverage, thick-tongued speech and watery, blood-shot eyes.” The report notes the driver was identified as a University of Washington student by a UW police officer who stopped by.
The driver initially objected to medical treatment, the report states, but eventually was placed on a backboard and in a neck collar and transported to Harborview Medical Center. He was declared “under arrest” for suspicion of driving under the influence prior to his transport to Harborview.
The report stated that Seferian-Jenkins refused a blood test and asked to speak with a lawyer. He was assigned to the on-call public defender. The hospital tried for a second blood test, Seferian-Jenkins refused and asked for a lawyer again. Since he’d already been granted a lawyer, a warrant was issued for his blood. His blood-alcohol content was not released.
Washington coach Steve Sarkisian issued a statement about the arrest and said any punishment would be handled internally.
Losing Seferian-Jenkins would definitely be a big blow to Washington, but this was a boneheaded move, especially with so much on the line. It’s unlikely that Sarkisian will kick Seferian-Jenkins, but there should be harsh punishment.
Seferian-Jenkins is the school’s leader for tight ends in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. He was second-team All-Pac-12 as a sophomore last season with 69 catches for 852 yards and seven touchdowns.
